Cecil, Grimes, AkLaff, Zorn at JALC - yes JALC

New York, NY (January 29, 2007) Jazz at Lincoln Center is proud to present Cecil Taylor and John Zorn as they bring their respective ensembles to the Rose Theater in Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, March 9 and 10 at 8pm.

Tickets are $30, $50, $75, $100, $120 and can be purchased at the Jazz at Lincoln Center box office on Broadway at 60th Street, by calling CenterCharge at (212) 721-6500 or via www.jalc.org.

Cecil Taylor: New AHA 3 is led by the avant-garde pioneer who has recently reunited with long-time associate, bassist Henry Grimes and is joined by the dynamic Pheeroan AkLaff on drums. Mr. Taylor's long career has spanned music from the mainstream to the experimental, performing with John Coltrane, Max Roach and the leading exponents of creative improvised music, and he is known for his inspired solo piano recitals.

John Zorn created Masada in 1994, achieving a unique sound by combining elements of klezmer, Eastern and Middle Eastern music with jazz, avant-garde, rock and classical to produce a body of work that defies academic categories. Since then, Masada has had many incarnations, but the ensemble performing in Rose Theater is the original quartet, consisting of Mr. Zorn (alto saxophone), Dave Douglas (trumpet), Greg Cohen (bass) and Joey Baron (drums)

Hey, Pat, I don't know if this makes you feel a lot better, but if you give the code "jazz 25" by phone or at the box office (but it's not good online), you can get a 25% discount. I do think this music will be well worth the ticket prices, and after all, there are many musicians whose ticket prices are always this high. I wish we could help with the ticket prices for some of our friends who just don't have enough money, but we were only given two comp tickets for each night, and they're gone. Well, one for each night went to me!

By the way, Henry's playing two other dates in New York this month and doing a weekend residency at U. Mich / Ann Arbor. Please see www.henrygrimes.com (and click on "schedule") for more information if you're interested. I posted a "Grimes Times" for March on jazzcorner someplace, but I never can find them again once I post them, or I'd send you the link.

Attached (I hope) is a great photo of Cecil Taylor by Hugo Van de Velde.
