Press Release: The “First Annual Freedom Jazz Festival”
February 2007, Black History Month, will bring the “First Annual Freedom Jazz Festival” to jazz lovers in the NY-NJ area. The festival is dedicated to the memory of one of the Civil Rights Movement’s most heroic and beloved figures, the late Fannie Lou Hamer.
Sponsored by Ron “Slim” Washington Productions and the Black Telephone Workers for Justice, in association with Sistas’ Place and Melchizedek Music Productions, the festival will present Jazz, the “Music of the Spirit” at several locations in the NYC area.
On Thursday, February 22nd, Cecil Brooks III and his CB3 band will perform at the world renowned Sweet Rhythm Jazz and Supper Club in NYC. Located at 88 7th Ave. South (corner of Bleecker). Cecil Brooks III is one of the music’s most sought after drummers, known for his “take no prisoners” style of drumming. An accomplished producer and owner of Cecil’s Jazz Club in West Orange, NJ, his performances always leaves the audience wanting more. Admission is $20 for each of the 8 and 10pm sets. There is a $10 minimum for drinks or food.
On Friday, February 23rd, Amiri and Amina Baraka, with their group “Blu Ark,” will perform at one of Harlem’s hottest new spots, CREOLE Jazz and Supper Club, 2167 Third Ave (corner of 118th). “Blu Ark”, under the direction of our greatest living poet, activist and artist Amiri Baraka, always presents thought provoking jazz programs, coupled with electric poetry. Admission is $20 for each of the 9 and 10:30pm sets. There is a $10 minimum for drinks or food.
On Saturday, February 24th, the “Billy Bang Quintet,” featuring saxophonist Henry P. Warner, will perform at Sistas’ Place in Brooklyn, 465 Nostrand Ave (corner of Nostrand and Jefferson). Billy Bang, one jazz’s most dynamic violin players, at Sistas’Place, Brooklyn’s premier jazz club: a great combination. Admission is $25 for each of the 9 and 10:30 sets.
The “First Annual Freedom Jazz Festival,” dedicated to the memory of Fannie Lou Hamer, continues the tradition of placing Jazz, the “music of the spirit” squarely in the advocacy of freedom and justice. Fannie Lou Hamer’s plain spoken style and fervent belief in the justness of the black freedom struggle will inspire current and future generations. As Fannie said, “nobody’s free until everybody’s free.”
The “First Annual Freedom Jazz Festival” is committed to the mission of bringing great music to the masses at affordable, working class prices.
