Yo, Dupre! (or any other Chi-town residents)
Chicago Blues clubs. Not the tourist traps, but good places to go and hear some blues. Lay it on me!

I'm not a resident but the Wise Fool's Pub used to be a nice place; that was in the 80's though....

Rosa's Lounge 3420 W. Armitage Ave. 773.342.0452
The original Checkerboard closed. haven't been to the new one, which I hear is in a Hyde Park mall: 5201 S. Harper Ct. (773) 684-1472
Buddy Guy's Legends, 754 South Wabash (he's lost the lease, so it'll move soon), (312) 427-0333 Higher buck, more tourists, but real.
Kingston Mines (tourist, yes, as it's Near North, but a great room, if you're not on the wrong side), 2548 North Halsted, (773) 477-4646.
Right down the block is B.L.U.E.S, 2519 North Halsted. The North Side bars have more tourists, but they often have the best lineups, too. 773) 528-1012

I've been to all of them 2 or three times and agree with Chris's choices. As far as Rosa's goes, you should think twice if you go on one of the many nights that Melvin Taylor and the Slack band perform. Melvin plays guitar about 50% faster than anyone else and at first it's a legitimate mind fuck. However, between the constant speed and the volume, I got alot of Melvin in a short time. And since it's a long cab ride from downtown you may not want to spring for the schlep.
The other clubs (even Kingston Mines, which does get crowded with tourists) all feel like the real thing, and have great vibes. I would chose between them based on who is playing on a given night. One great thing about Chi-town clubs is that the musicians hang in the club between sets (I don't think they have "backstages" to speak of) and are usually very approachable.
I have fond memories of saying hello to Sunnyland, Eddie Clearwater and Otis Rush. Also, I have fond memories of a very dapper Junior Wells standing by our table during his encore and the lovely Mrs. thelil putting her arm around him. (He didn't resist.)

Whoops, you said when, not where. I'm here in Chicago every week, Monday through Thursday, basically, through March. Schau, PM me your e-mail addy if you're thinking of coming up. We can do a Windy City JC hang.

That's it, I'm coming to Chicago. All I have to do is get the time off work, reschedule all the events with my kid for the next few weeks, get someone to watch my dog and skip out of all the prior commitments I've made. Cake.

Larry, bring the kid and the dog. They can live it up at the Marriott on my platinum points. Half your problem's solved.

Of the North Side places, Kingston Mines is the best. It's also where a lot of the celebrity drop-ins occur, like Jagger jumping onstage with Lefty Dizz during the '75 Stones tour stop.

I'm just kidding about the dog. I don't think the Marriott will take him. But by all means, bring your daughter and come on over. We can take in a Hawks game, make a weekend of it.

Did you ever catch Lefty Dizz, Chris? I've been playing his "Where the Hell Were You When I Got Home?" on my radio show for years.

Hopleaf is awesome, I just went there for the first time a few weeks ago. Apart from getting sick from a bad mussel, which I don't hold against the place, it was great. And they have Brother Thelonious on tap!

They have that De Proef Wild Flemish Primitive Ale there which Bivins initially recommended. So good!

Haven't been there since November when I met Annette Krebs and shared a couple of Sasha-provided hot ciders. But I will, next time.

Yeah, I know, I hate the thought of that, but they're the only game in town. Detroit's five hours away and we probably can't get tickets anyway.
