SweetArt New York: Gala at Christie's to benefit Gulf Coast artists

SweetArt New York: Gala at Christie's

FUNDRAISER RETURNS TO NEW YORK TO RAISE MONEY FOR GULF COAST ARTISTS RECOVERING FROM HURRICANE KATRINA

New Orleans, LA - The Contemporary Arts Center is pleased to return to New York to present the SweetArt New York Gala on March 2, 2007, at Christie's. The event will include music by New Orleans legend Kermit Ruffins and his BBQ Swingers, food by world-renowned New Orleans chefs, and live and silent auctions of famous Louisiana and New York artists. The event benefits the SweetArt Katrina Fund for gulf coast artists.

This year's honorees are those who have taken extraordinary steps to help the New Orleans art community rebuild. Sarah Bacon and Alexa Georges created the SweetArt Katrina Fund and organized the 2006 SweetArt New York Event. Stephanie Simon of NY1 News Channel traveled several times to New Orleans to interview Katrina survivors and document the recovery for New York television, and co-organized the From the Art of New York event that benefited four recovery charities. Finally, Johnson Controls Inc.'s Eric Reisner dedicated his company's staff and resources to repair and reconstruct the Contemporary Arts Center's damaged New Orleans building, without promise of immediate payment.

The New Orleans event chairs are Sally Suthon and Beth Lambert. The New York event chairs are Mr. and Mrs. Joseph M. Rault, III. Featured chefs will include Chuck Subra, 2004 Jamie Shannon Award winner, of La Cote Brasserie and Robert Iacovone of Cuvee. Cuvee was named one of the top six restaurants in New Orleans by Bon Appétit; Esquire put Iacovone on its Chefs to Watch list and New Orleans magazine named him Best New Chef in 2004.

The 2006 fundraiser was a smashing success, with over 600 attendees at the Bohen Foundation's lovely gallery in the Meatpacking District of Manhattan. Benefitting was the SweetArt Katrina Fund, which granted $140,000 Katrina-affected Gulf Coast artists whose studios and homes were destroyed by hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

SweetArt New York will be held on March 2, 2007, from 8pm to 11pm at Christie's New York in Rockefeller Center. Gala tickets are $150 for a single; $250 for couple; $350 for a Patron ticket or $600 per couple, which includes a New York Patron Party and Patron Preview Reception.
