The release of pianist ROBERT GLASPER's major label debut CANVAS in 2005 signaled the arrival of a singular new voice in jazz. TIME magazine praised Glasper's "improvisational creativity and technical skill." PEOPLE magazine noted the album's "accessible melodies, tumultuous beats and bright lyricism," placing Glasper in a lineage with jazz icons Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea. VIBE magazine declared that Glasper's "remarkable debut shows why cats from Mos Def to Roy Hargrove have sought him out-- proving that subtlety and soul are natural allies."
Now with the March 20th release of IN MY ELEMENT, Glasper fulfills the promise of his debut, featuring his remarkable trio with bassist Vicente Archer and drummer Damion Reid, and delving deeper into his hip-hop and gospel roots. IN MY ELEMENT includes seven new Glasper originals, as well as a tribute to the late, great hip-hop producer J Dilla, and a mash-up of Herbie Hancock's "Maiden Voyage" with Radiohead's "Everything In It's Right Place."
The GORDON THEATER JAZZ FESTIVAL kicked off on Saturday, January 27th and runs through March 31st with performances by saxophonist MIGUEL ZENON (Jan. 27th), pianist ROBERT GLASPER (Feb. 24th) and legendary trumpeter TERENCE BLANCHARD (March 31st).
Rutgers-Camden Center for the Arts is South New Jersey’s premier performing arts, visual arts and arts education institution and has been designated a "Major Arts Organization of New Jersey" by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State. Located on the Camden waterfront, the RCCA's three main venues - the Walter K. Gordon Theater, Stedman Gallery, and Black Box Studio, serves as focal points for the visual and performing arts in the region from international touring artists and exhibitions to local theatre and community arts.
