If you like John Abercrombie ...

Not an ECM release, but a much appreciated ECM artist ...

If you like JA, check out Mark Egan's new release "As We Speak" A trio with John, Danny Gottlieb and Egan on fretless bass.

If no one told you, you'd think it was an Abercrombie CD.

The music is a combination of contemporary straight-ahead and free jazz. It is very much "in the moment" -- a situation I've always thought John Abercrombie excelled in. In spirit it is close to his "September" minus Surman or possibly his early organ trios.

The constitution of the group is so different from his recent ECM efforts with Mark Feldman that I'd hesitate to say if you like one you'd like the other. But it's some of his best trio work in years and a great example of trio jazz at it's best.
--and no, I'm not on Egan's payrole

I was listening to DeJohnette's "Untitled" a couple of days ago (with Abercrombie, Eddie Gomez and Alwx Foster. I bought this when it came out in '76 and it was my first exposure to Abercombie and DeJohnette. It was my first exposure to music from the Jazz realm that was beyond fusion. This holds up very well, IMO. The next LP I bought after this one was "Timeless". After that I was hooked.

I saw Abercombie here in DC last year with Mark Copeland, Drew Gress and Tony Martucci. His playing was brilliant - I just wish he'd give up those cigs...he looked like an old man. Though, I could imagine his response to that.

Abercrombie is on Jerry Bergonzi's latest -- "The Tenorist" -- which is set to be released next month on Savant.
