I am sorry to say that this is the most disappointing lineup I have ever seen at Monterey and the first one I attended was around 1965!! That doesn't mean that there's no one I like who is performing but, overall, a tremendous letdown!

I'm pretty happy with plenty of the acts for this year. Herbie Hancock was great two years back. Also, I'm looking forward to seeing the Clayton-Hamilton JO, Kurt Elling (haven't decided on the Four Brothers thing yet), Dave Douglas (don't know his stuff, but I've always wanted to check it out), Buckwheat Zydeco (ditto as for Douglas), and the Friday night lineup in general looks very interesting.

Anyway, I've already bought the (hopefully good) upgrades and reserved our room. Can't wait!

David,

I'd be happy to link up again. Maybe some other Jazz Corner folks will join us. Granted, I'm a bit out of the loop, as I haven't really been monitoring the board for about 6 months.

Rob

P.S. I may have convinced my boss to come up for one day on a grounds pass. His conception of jazz veers towards smooth, but I loaned him some Kurt Elling and Clayton-Hamilton, and pointed him towards a more appropriate radio station (88.3 FM KCLU), to show him what the festival would be like.

Since I can't make it, I hope someone will eat some of Pat DuVal's ribs in my honor. He's the guy with the monster smoker that looks like a locomotive. Killer ribs. In real life Pat is a realtor.

"Originally from Fort Pierce, Florida, I have worked on the Monterey Peninsula for 36years. Upon joining the Monterey County Sheriff's Department in 1967, I became their first black Deputy Sheriff and recently retired after 30 years of service.

Among my many interests is my love of music. As a Countertenor, I have performed with the Monterey County Choral Society, I Cantori, Camerata Singers, and have sung solos with the Monterey County Symphony and Monterey Bay Symphony, among other groups. I have traveled, singing the National Anthem for professional sports teams, such as the Houston Rockets and the San Francisco Giants. Today I am still known on the Peninsula as "the Singing Sheriff".

I have had cameo roles in the movies Sudden Impact, The Enforcer and the Rookie, starring Clint Eastwood. I also hosted my own television show on a CBS affiliate and have had principal parts in commercials on national television, performed with Doris Day, Les Brown and His Band of Reknown, Paul Anka, Rosemary Clooney, the Gatlin Brothers, the late Phil Harris, Glenn Campbell, Charlie Daniels and his band, and the Smothers Brothers, to mention a few.

My home is Carmel, but I love the entire Monterey County, with its beautiful farmlands, vineyards, mountains, quaint villages, Missions, coastlands, and generations of really nice people."

My wife and I attended this year and had a good time, although we were both fighting colds for the weekend, so we couldn't see as much as we wanted to.

Briefly, the highlights were:

Friday - Michel Camilo, Remember Shakti

Saturday - Buckwheat Zydeco, Bobby Bradford Mo'tet, Ralph Towner w/Gary Burton, Dena Derose w/Matt Wilson (this one mostly for Matt Wilson)

Sunday - John Stetch, Jay McShann w/Duke Robillard (mostly for historic value, Jay's voice isn't too good, plus he couldn't remember the lyrics, still great on piano though), Dave Douglas, Herbie Hancock

We saw some other stuff, some was good, some was okay. I bought a ton of CDs. We met David Gitin (thanks for the CD advice) again.

Unfortunately, Dee was feeling quite poorly, so she went back to the hotel on Sunday night and missed Herbie Hancock. She was pretty disappointed about that, even if I am the jazz nut of the household (she is more of a fan of live music in general).

I think he's in his early '90s but someone else here can tell you more specifically, I'm sure.

Wow, to be 94 and still be "great on piano" is amazing. Can't really begrudge his voice "not being too good" or his forgetting a few lyrics, now can you?

'hornplayer': Yes, do make reservations in advance for Monterey (it will be fun to see you again....and finally meet Valerie, whom I almost met a few years back at the festival).
David: I knew someone like you would be able to be more specific about Jay's age!!

And I'm very much looking forward to meeting you, especially since you've gotten such "good press" by people whose opinions I respect! LOL!!

Best,

Valerie

Regarding Jay McShann, you are correct that he should be cut some slack. I still enjoyed the set. I wish I could play piano half as well.

And, Valerie, does this mean that you respect me? Or am I just caught in the complimentary crossfire (hee)?

You ain't kidding about advance. All the motels near the fairgrounds are booked up a year in advance by repeaters. It's tough to find anything reasonable in Monterey after the spring. And if you don't have a car good luck, because there's no infrastructure for getting back to downtown Monterey late night. Insufficient cab service, no central queue, and no buses unless you stay at the Hilton or Hyatt, at full rack rate, and use their shuttles.

Yes, his group was excellent. Inventive writing for the front line (and Roberto Miranda's bass anchoring things). Bobby's son and daughter-in-law were in the audience and BB talked of trying to teach his son trumpet and a composition which emerged from the son's mistakes.
Compositions/arrangements/playing all terrific.
