Brian Blade at the VV this week!

I saw this group last night at the Vanguard here in NYC! This is a must see for anyone who is in NYC this week. What a beautiful group of players. Jon Cowherd on piano, Myron Walden on alto and baritone clarinet (a great, great player, imho + a total sweetie!), Chris Thomas on bass, a young cat on tenor whose name I can't recall--but a fabulous player too--and Peter Bernstein on guitar.

The place was packed as everyone comes out for a rare appearance of Brian in a small club setting.

Brian is just a gorgeous, musical and interesting drummer and a great bandleader too. The group was so in sync with one another and the players were inspired to play deeper & deeper, pulling extraordinary phrases & feelings from the depths of their souls! Really, I'm not kidding. Myron and others in the group were visibly moved by their own and each other's playing.

They played some original tunes by Jon Cowherd and then played some utterly gorgeous and moving hymns. Brian dedicated the night to Michael Brecker.

I was able to talk to Myron for a minute and congratulate him on his upcoming nuptials. I also told him that my younger daughter got into LaGuardia H.S. for the Arts (his alma mater) for music. I had talked to Myron previously about this and he was sure she'd get in.

Afterwards, I wanted to stop by the kitchen and say goodbye to Myron but Lorraine was there not allowing anyone to even go near there. Sigh...

Anyway, do go to see this group but be sure to make a reservation.

Jimmy Scott is at Iridium this week too. I'd love to go hear him too--but I'm doing something every night this week so it's getting a little crazy!

I'm hoping to get over there at some point this weekend, interested to see how Bernstein fits in the with the Fellowship.
