Hi Sand

Erkki Sven Tuur (I presume that's who you're asking about) is a 48 yr-old Estonian 'serious music' composer, conservatory-trained who ran a Prog Rock group called In Spe in the ealy 80s, and who has previous form on ECM (check out the superb 'Crystallisatio' on New Series!)

Wasn't that a track off one of his earlier albums?

That one as well? (twice??)

So something strange about some of these titles at least.

Lechner hasn't recorded much, but I've heard her on Misha Alperin's Night, and she also recorded with Vassilis Tsabropoulos on Chants, Hymns, and Dances. Inhabits the space that straddles jazz and classical.

There is a track called 'The Last Stage Of A Long Journey' on 'Little Movements' - I wonder if this new EW date with its suggestive title is some kind of revisiting/reworking older comps al a Steve Kuhn's 'Remembering Tomorrow' (Herr Eicher seems keen on such approaches)

She's also heard to good effect on the recent CD by Francois Couturier Nostalghia - Song For Tarkovsky on ecm. She was Erik Friedlander's replacement in Sylvie Courvoisier's Abaton when they toured Europe a few years ago to promote their ecm CD (which I heard via webcast on Dutch radio).

The one I'm (pleasantly) surprised to see is the Paul Bley. We haven't heard much from him lately which I have assumed must be due to some physical concerns.

I saw a Danish portrait of Marilyn Mazur tonight. It itcluded a couple of songs from a recording session of a new Mazur album.

Manfred Eicher was present. Some of the tracks are duos between Garbarek and Mazur. Garbarek entered her musical world. Dont't know when this will be out.

Interesting upcoming release!

I'll buy it:

2007年5月7 - András Schiff "Beethoven: The Piano Sonatas, Vol. 9"
2007年514 - Miroslav Vitous "Universal Syncopations II"

I'll probably buy it:

2007年319 - The Hillard Ensemble "J.S.Bach - Motets, BWV 225-230"
2007年514 - Paul Bley "In Mondsee"

Curiosity for me:

2007年226 - Motian / Frisell / Lovano "Time And Time Again"
2007年319 - John Abercrombie "The Third Quartet"
2007年416 - Eberhard Weber "Stages Of A Long Journey"
2007年430 - John Surman "The Spaces In Between"

I listened to a bit of this in a record shop, and was very disappointed on first listen. Has any one else heard it yet? Sounded much less inspired than they usually are, but I really should listen to it in more depth.

Also, anyone know who's on the new bley?

There is one missing: Sinikka Langeland (v, kantele)- "Starflowers". With A Henriksen, T Seim, A Jormin, and Markku Ounaskari.
I absolutely love the album ("Runoja") released in 2002 on heilo/Grappa. Arve Henriksen, Bjørn Kjellemyr, Pål Thowsen were the musicians then.

I heard on the yahoo ECM group list that this one is a live recording of a 65th Birthday gig for Weber.

The ECM site had this blurb about the concert:

http://www.ecmrecords.com/News/Diary...t=&we_start=56

P.S. for those unfamiliar with the Yahoo ECM group, here's a link:

Somehow this has passed beneath my radar, though I have probably observed that it exists on http://www.arvehenriksen.no/

I just heard Runoja for the first time and understand well why she'll be on ECM this autumn. Anyway, I check out anything with Jormin and Henriksen. I assume that Markku Ouunaskari is a Finnish percussionist or drummer and in that case he should blend in nicely?

re the 2000th ....Well the last one I have a number for is the Anat Fort
A Long Story which was 1994. I would have thought that they might stick at either the Eberhard Weber release or something to mark the importance.

Either that or something on the list above that is random

Let me have a guess, a percussionist/saxophonist duo.

Well, trying to be a little more serious...

I don't know what the Jon Balke solo piano disque will sound like, but at this stage every concert and recording by Balke is a must.

A film maker has been following Balke's Batagraph and Mangnetic North Orchestra touring throughout Europe through five years A DVD with English subtitles will be out sometime this year. You may read about it here

Its already out over here. I've listened to part of it in a record shop - first impressions were a)beautiful, and b)that it is clearly following on from 'Nine to get ready'. Quite composed, with a strong modern classical/free improv feel rather than 'free jazz'.
It quite reminded me of the recent Evan Parker 'crossing the river', and features some of the same musicians, including Evan.
But like I say, I've not heard it all, and that which I have heard was only once. I'll probably buy it when I'm feeling less broke!
