Hrm...can I include non-Jazz intros composed partially of spoken comments? If so, then I'll nominate Pete Anderson's intro to Dwight Yoakam's "Please, Please Baby." Funny and jaw-dropping at the same time.

"Love" from "First Meditations" by Coltrane. Its the beginning of my favorite album and when I hear the intro to "Love" I know I am in for a real treat.

The start of Charlie Parker's "Parker's Mood" (appropriately, reproduced verbatim on Sonny Rollins' Plays for Bird too)

Oliver Nelson "Stolen Moments"--first few notes grab me every time.

Horace Silver "Sighin' And Cryin'"--I love the way the bass and drums introduce the theme, then the horns pick it up and take it a step further, then Horace follows with those infectious lines. The tune has been stuck in my head for weeks, in a good way...

Non-jazz: Les Claypool, Primus "Fish On"--incredible virtuoso bass composition opens the tune.

Charles Mingus & Eric Dolphy on "Stormy Weather" from "Mingus" (candid).
A (big) mention also to "El Barrio" (Derek Taylor choice), a forgotten (thanks to DT to have exhume it) masterpiece from Joe Henderson, recorded near the end of the hardbop era.

I played Monk's Music for the first time last night and the short opening "Abide With Me" just about knocked me out.
