Montreal Festival Brings Liberation Music to the People. 7th Annual Suoni Per Il Popolo Festival announces its first confirmed artists.
Montreal, Quebec, CANADA (February 14, 2007)
Tapping into some of the world’s most interesting and challenging music, the Suoni Per Il Popolo Festival (Sounds for the People Festival) will include eminent international acts such as Marc Ribot and Akron/Family as part of a four-week celebration of Liberation music.
The festival, running from June 1-26, 2007, reflects that diversity with an eclectic collection of genres such as bent rock, noise, avant folk, free jazz, urban beats, experimental electronics and contemporary composition. It features both established musicians who bring a wealth of tradition and experience to their playing as well as younger, emerging artists. Some of the acts include the mysterious recluse singer-songwriter Jandek, French cut and paste electronic/voice pioneer Henri Chopin, the incomparable duo of William Parker and Hamid Drake, Dutch legends The Ex, and underground Improv collective Sunburned Hand of The Man.
“Liberation music is inspired by freedom of expression, improvisation, and sonic exploration and appeals to music aficionados world wide,” says festival founder Mauro Pezzente. “Given the context in which much of this music is made and the reaction it provokes, it is also music that resonates with progressive social movements.”
The Suoni Per Il Popolo music festival will present a special live soundtrack series entitled Bande Suoni (Suoni Soundtrack Series). The series will highlight contemporary musicians whose work overlaps music with film and video. Featured artists will include Phill Niblock, Tim Hecker, Les Georges Leningrad, Germany’s Felix Kubin as well as many others.
Another special Suoni Per Il Popolo series entitled Know Your Rights will present five concerts and one workshop featuring politically engaged contemporary musicians who use their art to raise awareness of racism as they confront it in their daily lives.
Other noteworthy activities will include: Tools of the Trade workshop series for young musicians, and the fifth annual family day Popolo in the Park.
