i get a kick out of...stanley crouch
reall alcohol doesnt thrill me at all...
stanley crouch is too funny. stanley's latest race diatribe lands in the magazine jazztimes this month where he aims his clown act towards bobby douglas. i wont detail this drunken fantasy, becuz a short paraphrased outline will suffice.
dave douglass is the lucky recipient of white jazz critic's collective subconscious (or is it subconscience) conspiracy to alleviate white inadequacy or something according to crouch. they loft bobby into jazz stardom at the expense expense of
--- you almost guessed it --
No, he didnt mention wynton. He listed a couple other paper tigers (formerly mislabled young lions). i think it was hargrove, Blanchard, & wallace roney or was it nicholas payton. nicholas is not bad. it really doesnt matter they sound just alike and play the same music.
crouch contends that these 3 could blow circles around douglass. now, i have never been an advocate of douglass' ability to organize music or his musicianship. altho ive heard some good music from him on masada cds. further, this music is a little interesting. on the otherhand, the 3 musicians that stan lists have never made a good cd or put together 5 interesting notes. maybe im jaded.
i gave blanchard another try recently after hearing branford do a pretty good rendition of 'love supreme.' HOW'S THAT FOR INNOVATION!!! actually, i kinda liked it. i digress a wee bit. so i down load joanne brackeen's 'fi fi goes to heaven'. i like joanne. damn good player. made a couple good albums previously. 'fifi' gets 4.5 stars or maybe 5 from allmusic guide.
the recording is totally messed up. these guys cant touch anything without totally messing it up. boring? joanne boring? well, she is boring while playing with these no talents. stanley bashes douglass just as a method to promote these boring no talents. i mean it reaches a level of absurdity.
why not discuss herb robertson or paul smoker? is freddie dead??? or how about talking about the just recently deceased great vetern art farmer who was making better cds than these guys throught the 80=90s.
what about wadada leo smith, arturo sandoval, tomas stanko, cecil bridgewater, tom harrel, jon faddis, joe mcphee, ryan kisor, ? these can play trumpet and innovate. none of the guys s mentioned by stan, could even stand in today's top ten .
one has to wonder if stanley's omission of mainstream trumpet player, tom harrell, is not only because tom is white, but is also a result of a prejudice stan may hold against those who suffer with mental health issues. paradoxically, stanley seems to suffer many various delusions of his own. those include his own delusions of grandeur.
it's almost getting sad. seriously, it's almost a sick joke to publish this guy and put him out there looking so foolish. i think jazztimes should be ashamed. i will read no more stan nor discuss him no more. it's wrong.
