The Donners
Hey did anyone watch the show about the Donner Party on PBS Monday night.?...CREEEEEEEEEEEPY...I had to sleep with the lights on. Also, was wondering if the namesake for Hastings School of Law in San Francisco is a relative or the same Hastings whose "shortcut" through the Sierras caused the Donner tragedy. Anyone know?

I missed the show, but I can never bring myself to order Doner Kebab at a Turkish restaurant.

It was a Ric Burns' documentary. I couldn't turn it off for even a moment, not even to watch Fear Factor.
Serranus (what kind of name is that?) Clinton Hastings founded the law school which is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year by the way. He is not the same Hastings, but that doesn't mean that he wasn't a relative. Hastings retired to Napa Valley in his later life. Napa Valley is cooluh. I wouldn't mind retiring there. Hopefully it will still be idyllic when I'm ancient.

I find it extraordinarily difficult to believe that we have no experts on cannibalism in this joint...

I caught it the other night. I originally watched it when it first aired back in 1990 or so (1990-1993, not sure about date) strangely enough...one day after driving over Donner Pass on the way back from Lake Tahoe. I watched it with a close friend who lives in Yuba City, and who is also a great source of all things related to Northern CA (his hobby is local folklore, history, culture, etc). At the time I said it was the best documentary I've seen but I do believe he eventually out did himself with "New York" (Ric is much preferred over Ken, big time). His related stories about the Donner Party complemented the show quite nicely.
It was a wonderful example of what was sometimes wrong with those pioneering types, too much hubris for their own good.
Great television though!

I saw the show and enjoyed(?) it. In college I wrote a review of a book about the Donner Party for a class I took called The American West.
Steak tips, anyone?
