Spelman College Women's Jazz Festival

Spelman College to host Women's Jazz Festival

Atlanta (March 13, 2007)-- >From March 30 through April 2, 2005, Spelman College will host “Kenyetta: A Festival of Women in Jazz,” honoring female leaders in that genre. Established stars and emerging younger talent, including Valerie Capers, Kathleen Bertrand, Tia Fuller, and the Spelman Jazz Ensemble will perform during the festival. A special tribute to jazz pioneer Mary Lou Williams is also scheduled. Several Spelman College departments and programs, including Music, Comparative Women’s Studies, African Diaspora and the World, the Ethel Waddell Githii Honors Program and the Jazz Ensemble, are partnering with Spelman’s Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement to sponsor the festival. All events will take place in the Cosby Academic Center of Spelman College and are free and open to the public.

Wednesday, March 30
Panel: “Finding and Creating Power in the Jazz Community,” Tia Fuller Quartet, 3:00 p.m. Location: Cosby Room 103
Lecture/Demonstration: “Roots and Branches of Our Music,” Tia Fuller, 6 p.m. Location: Cosby Auditorium
Opening Ceremony: Giwayen Mata African Drum Ensemble, 7:30 p.m.
Location: Cosby Auditorium
Concert: Tia Fuller Quartet, 8 p.m. Location: Cosby Auditorium

Thursday, March 31
All-College Convocation: “Honoring the Legacy of Mary Lou Williams,” 11 a.m. Location : Cosby Auditorium
Panel: “Soul on Soul: Mary Lou Williams and the Sacred Music Tradition,”
6 p.m. Location: Cosby Auditorium
Concert: “Mary Lou’s Mass,” Mass Choir, Soloists, and Instrumentalists, 7 p.m. Location: Cosby Auditorium
Concert: Kathleen Bertrand, 8:30 p.m. Location: Cosby Auditorium

Friday, April 1
Panel: “My Life in Jazz So Far: Finding My Way,” Valerie Capers and guests,
10 a.m. Location: Packard Auditorium (Packard Hall 3rd Floor)
Lecture/Demonstration: “Creativity: It’s Fire & Fervor,” Valerie Capers, 3 p.m. Location: Fine Arts Building Room 107
Concert: Valerie Capers Trio, 8 p.m. Location: Cosby Auditorium

Saturday, April 2
Concert: Spelman Jazz Ensemble with guest artist Chanda McKnight, 7:30 p.m.
Location: Cosby Auditorium
Closing Ceremony and Reception immediately following the concert.
