Spelman College Women's Jazz Festival
Spelman College to host Women's Jazz Festival
Atlanta (March 13, 2007)-- >From March 30 through April 2, 2005, Spelman College will host “Kenyetta: A Festival of Women in Jazz,” honoring female leaders in that genre. Established stars and emerging younger talent, including Valerie Capers, Kathleen Bertrand, Tia Fuller, and the Spelman Jazz Ensemble will perform during the festival. A special tribute to jazz pioneer Mary Lou Williams is also scheduled. Several Spelman College departments and programs, including Music, Comparative Women’s Studies, African Diaspora and the World, the Ethel Waddell Githii Honors Program and the Jazz Ensemble, are partnering with Spelman’s Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement to sponsor the festival. All events will take place in the Cosby Academic Center of Spelman College and are free and open to the public.
