Desi, I wouldn't call myself the ultimate Ella Fitzgerald fan but if you tell us what song you're referring to maybe somebody can clear things up for you. Oh, and by the way, say hi to Lucy for me...............

I'm pretty hip to Ella. What's the song? Would love to help if I can.

BTW: has anybody been checking out the DVD's of performances from Norman Granz's Montreux presentations? They're great. I mention it because one of the one's I picked up was a set by Ella in 1977 with the Tommy Flanagan trio. I think the series just came out. Keep an eye out for them.

Not that one, the other one!

As long we're talking Ella, one of my dancers has been raving about her Concert In Rome album, which evidently has a story connected with it. Any of you know the album?

I've been spinning her version of "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most" at my dances recently. Great version of a great song!

Okay, here we go.

One of my pleasures as a kid was listening to jazz on the radio with my mom. This one evening, Ella was singing a song and went into scat mode. She was going back and forth with the trumpet player, and he hit a high note. Ella, without missing a beat, scatted right back at him, ending her riff with something like, "shoo bop and skidda wee boy you're not gonna break my voice with that note tonight."

That is all I have. You can see why I need an Ella fanatic. Any help?

BTW: I have a friend who has a Norman Granz Montreux DVD? He raves about it. I have to get that Ella set.

I recall Ella doing that with the Ellington Band in the COte d'Azur concert.

I think it was a regular item in the JATP concerts.

I remember seeing Ella in 1988 or 89 with my mom. She gave a wonderful performance. I have named one of my new kittens after her. (My mom and I recently adopted a couple of kittens from the humane society. They are a pair of sisters named Ella & Etta.)

I saw her plenty of times, and she was always special, unique, and better than anything else you could name.

I saw her in Detroit in 1974, and she was so good that the audience wouldn't let her off the stage. I think she did 6 or 7 extras songs, just for the fans. It was wild.

Thursday, I believe, will be the 10th anniversary of her death.

On June 15, 1996, Ella Fitzgerald died in her Beverly Hills home.

from: http://www.ellafitzgerald.com/about/bio/end.html

My wife played violin in a symphony orchestra, which had quite a few "guest" artists come through.

Without exeption, Ella was the most gracious "guest" they had during my wife's tenure of several years.

Ella Fitzgerald

Hello my fellow jazz fanatics! My name is Jen and I work at Universal Music Group (UMG). I would like to share an album from a person that is very near and dear to all of our hearts. The Very Best of Cole Porter was released on February 13 of this year and it features the greatest songs from Ella Fitzgerald. (http://www.vervemusicgroup.com/artis...c=prd&aid=2685) My personal favorite is In the Still of the Night. This album is perfect for a new Ella listener or it can be added to the collection of a long time listener. If anyone has any feedback on this album or general comments, please feel free to share. I will definitely listen to anything anyone has to say.

Jen

Desi, you're probably not paying close attention to this thread since it's been a long time since your question, but that performance that you heard was C Jam Blues from Jazz At The Santa Monica Civic. She was sparring with Roy Eldridge. That's one of her greatest performances for she also trades off with Al Grey, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Stan Getz and Eddie Lockjaw Davis. Each tradeoff has a spontaneous punchline of one sort or another. She sounds tremendous throughout. It's from about 1972.

Jen, tell the people at Verve to reissue Ella In Hollywood. That's her greatest record in my opinion. She scats on Take The A Train for nine minutes without running out of ideas. It's rather incredible, yet it's never appeared on CD.
