Jimmy Giuffre 1961 on Sale

for $27.98 at True Blue Records. I've been meaning to pick this up but hadn't seen it for less than $34 or so. Went over to get the Randy Weston Mosaic Select and stuck around long enough to get the Giuffre and that Cy Touff Octet and Quintet disc which I've long been curious about and had thought it was way out of print.

Huge PSF Clearance Sale

Hey everyone:

The Japanese label PSF is closing its U.S. office in a little over a week, and in the meantime is selling off its stock at 50% off. Most of the label is devoted to various forms of heavy Japanese psychedelic and rock-oriented stuff (Keiji Haino, Fushitsusha, High Rise, Acid Mothers Temple, etc.). But if you look closely at this list, you'll also see hard-to-find and usually expensive releases by Derek Bailey, Peter Brötzmann, AMM, Barre Phillips... even Lee Konitz! The offer's only good until August 20, so check out:

Other Steve,

Hey thanks for the tip, man. I just got in my order before the stuff I wanted ran out--and it's running out fast folks. I think the AMM album is gone, but there might be a Brotzmann disc in there.

What does it sound like? Which other albums or artists would you compare it to?

The Bertoia has sold out, along with virtually everything that I wanted to order. I should have moved more quickly.

BMG Sale - Opinions Please

Hope this is the right place for this thread. Anyway, BMG is having a 50% off sale with no shipping charges, not too bad if you can find anything worth picking up. These are among their "new" titles, and so I would appreciate any opinions:

Gary Bartz - Music Is My Sanctuary

Bad Plus - These Are The Vistas (are these guys really that good?)

Duke Ellington - Never No Lament (Blanton-Webster Band) . . .I have the old 3 CD set..is this the one which has been remastered for better sound?
Could pick it up for $15.99 total price. I'd then sell my old 3 cd box on the web for a song.

Roy Hargrove - The RH Factor

Freddie Hubbard - Hub Cap

Jackie McLean - Jackie's Bag

Sonny Stitt - Goin Down Slow

Those are the ones that caught my eye, at least.

Any of them worth picking up??

I was planning on picking up the Hubbard, McLean, and the Stitt. I'd also be interested to read opinions, though I'll probably order them anyway.

I have MUSIC IS MY SANCTUARY, which is some pretty cool fusiony funky stuff a la the Mizell brothers. Avoid it if you don't like that sort of sound.

I like Iverson, too.

The Ellington set is a good deal.

GM Records - another sale!

The latest consumer alert: Gunther Schuller's GM label is having a 20th anniversary sale, with certain items marked down to $6.99-$9.99. Choice gems among the offerings include Eric Dolphy's Vintage Dolphy, Human Feel's Scatter, Jamie Baum's Sight Unheard, Mark Whitecage's Spilt Personality and especially Mark Helias's excellent Fictionary. Anyone else see anything unmissable here? I'm curious about that Paul Motian, Ed Schuller, Simon Nabatov and Arto Tuncboyaci's Circle the Line... (There are classical items in the sale, too, but those don't seem quite so impressive.)

Strangely, their 888 number has been disconnected. I'm a little rluctant to order on line under the circumstances, though I'd certainly like the Helias and Dolphy.

I think this sale has been going on for at least 8 months now. 'Round that time, I picked up the Helias and Whitecage dates and Hersch/Moore/Hemingway Thirteen Ways through the sale, and Ran Blake's Painted Rhythms, Vol. 1 plus Hemingway's Waltzes, Two-Steps, etc. at full price. All of them well worth it, particularly the Whitecage, which was quite a revelation for me. There is a Schuller/Nabatov/Tuncboyaci/Betsch date, Inside Lookin' Out, on Tutu that I have, and while it's very good, I wouldn't consider it essential. Probably worth ordering if you're going to pick up a bunch, though.

Boris, I'm guessing that the 888 number might have been sacrificed to cut corners, just like I would imagine this fire sale is being held in order to raise funds and cut back on storage costs. I know that GM is still in business and sending out new releases -- I got a new disc by Russell Sherman in the mail not so long ago -- so I'd not be overly concerned about that phone line.

Strich, thanks for the info. I had no idea this sale had been going on so long, or I wouldn't likely have posted the link. It's funny, I only stumbled upon the sale after running a Google search on Mark Whitecage, whose self-released disc with the same trio, No Respect, has been getting played a lot in my cubicle lately. I'll grab this one cheap while I can. Thanks, too, for the insight regarding Nabatov et al.

Drimala Blowout Sale

Drimala's moving to Europe and their whole stock is 40%, to save moving things cross the pond. One of the best distributors in the US. Get 'em while they're hot.

Damn you Gary Sisco. Damn you to hell.

I was minding my own business at 6:30am, on my way to play racquetball, downing a protein shake, reading e-mail, and I have to see this post. 20 minutes and 14 discs later, I'm late for racquetball and now have to devise an explanation for some minor budget busting right before our RV trip.

Damn you to hell.

Flew through the Drimala site last night BEFORE seeing Gordon's Moondoc post, and ordered 11 of 'em. I'm hoping they're still in stock when they fill the order, what with all you friggin' vultures around here. Bet no one else ordered KONK like I did, though.... Charlie K. rules.

Deal with it, Christmas! :-)

Matter of fact, I bought all of the Brackeens they had except for one I already owned.

And more that I don't want to think about until the credit card bill arrives. Then, I'll be thinking about it ....

This is a terrible illness, I tell you.

Well, I was already way over budget, so this is about it for me for the rest of the year. But I ordered Kollaps, Always Too Late But Never Too Early, Stefan, We See, and School Days. Hopefully those are all in, but I put some alts, too: At Les Instants Chavires (Parker/Guy/Lytton), Chicago Tenor Duets, and Short Visit to Nowhere.

Whee!

My only disappointment with the site is that they make you ship to your billing address. I like to have my discs delivered to work, where I think the postal service does a better job than in my neighborhood. Well, beggars can't be choosers, I guess.

I also got the illness, whatever it is:

1)Version Soul - Spaceways
2)Twenty Minute Cliff
3)Trigonometry - DKV
4)Live at the Glenn Miller Cafe - AALY + Vndrmrk
5)Ask the Sun - Zerang/Drake
6)School Days

And I'm just a poor PhD student, think how broke I must be (my Extended Play arrived just today, did I tell you it was an amazing set).

I got thwo Moondocs from Drimala

Fire In The Valley --
New World Pygmies Vol 2

as well as

Lacy-Live At Unity Temple
Parker/McPhee-- Tenor Duets
Markus Eichenberger - DOMINO: Concept for Orchestra

I pre-ordered the Miles Blackhawk on heavy vinyl from Mosaic, I also made a pre-order committment to get the Jimmy Lyons box, Recently, I've been sucked into the live-jazz cdr bootleg traders network. Miles, Braxton, CT, Rivers, Tippett, Osborne, Pullen,Crispell, LJCO, EP, Moondoc, even AMM. So it's not like I'm lacking stuff to listen to.
