Thinking about getting this one, anybody have it?

I love it, too, as I do all of this trio's recordings (except Jazz Trash, which I like but don't love).

Hermann -- Try "Kulak." That's my favorite, perhaps because it was also the first one I heard.

By chance today I saw the hat-offer and bought 'Dissonant Characters' ( 5.99€ ). Allthough that should be another thread I recommend it here: Ellery and Han Bennink at work, and they do it very well.
So it gets my recommendition:

I don't have that one, so I can't compare the two, but I'm sure that if you like that one, you'll like Arcanum.

I do have (as do, I guess many others here) One Great Day, Kulak 29&30 and also Arcanum Moderne. Although it might be my crude perceptual/analyzing/abstracting capabilities, I hear all three as being rather close in conception and execution. The point here being that if you (or anyone) has either of the three and likes it, I would be very surprised if they actually disliked any of the other two (of course, you can still have favorites and those you like less).

Of course Ellery has tread a lot of different ground, e.g, duo with Bennink and the quasi-collective improvisation "Vanishin Point," both of which, I think, are quite different from the trio albums so that would be a step out to see whether one also likes those faces of Ellery. As for me, I very much prefer the trio recordings and what I particularly like about them is the almost organic character of the pieces where they let loose for a while to come back to one of those beatiful melodies penned by Eskelin. It also ain't half bad to hear him rip as well (as he does on the second track of the last - Arcanum Moderne - CD, with Jim Black showing once again how versatile he is).

Ellery says in one of his liner notes that Chadbourne told him this trio is like The Beatles of out music. (Almost) everyone loves them. There are probably some holdouts for whoever the Rolling Stones of out music might be. Mileage may vary.

Stones of out music = Die Like a Dog Quartet?

As for Ellery, his music is wonderful. Unfortunately, I've only seen Andrea Parkins live (in Ann Arbor a couple of years back). Ellery keeps hitting places like Cologne for his Euro-tours, but never Berlin.

I might have to spring for a train ticket come October. Ellery is playing with Sylvie Courvoisier in Cologne and in some small town (I forget the name) with Han Bennink. Maybe I should get off my duff and catch one of these shows.

Is it just me, or does 43 rpm out-rock an awful lot of today's jazz-rock (and straight rock, too) and out-dance as much jazz-dance (of the electro, d''n'b kind)?

I have all of Ellery's trio records (and several other Hats) and love them all, except for Jazz Trash, which I like. You can't go wrong on any of the Hats. Get 'em while you can. They won't be around forever and you might as well buy them now before the E-bay bidding starts.

Incidentally, Ellery has some of the o.o.p. Hats available from his website.

No, it isn't just you! Arcanum Moderne was the first Ellery I listened to, and I love it, especially 43 RPM. I think it's my favorite of his recordings, but I also really enjoy Kulak 29 & 30 and Ramifications as well.

It is not enough to have them all, one should "own" them izzit.

edit: More to the point, if one digs any of the trio's albums, one should and will eventually get them all; it's only a question of in which order.

If not, your threshold for the level of enthusiasm necessary for you to give a shot at an album must be really high.
