I have left JC. If my deletions disrupt continuity, please accept my apology, but JC is no longer the place to be, as far as I am concerned.

I saw this the other day and--woohoo!--I run Windows ME, not bothered by this problem.

Having tried to do some troubleshooting on ME, do I detect an emphasis on the word this here Brian?

Chris A will be happy to know in the Mac environment I'm currently administrating, I didn't have to do a blessed thing to safeguard against this potential hazard...
...on the other hand, I had to replace three crappy Mac keyboards, rebuild an E-Mac that shit itself right out of the box, replace another E-Mac's bad memory (the memory that actually *came* with the machine), return yet another E-Mac to our Apple supplier (bad USB port), and order another G4 because the current G4 running OS X Server can't do file sharing and run Now-Up-To-Date at the same time without taxing the processor.
But thank goodness I don't have to worry about this big Net Attack! Whew! :-)

No, I've had no other problems since picking up my current system about 2 years ago (Dell 4300, p4). Maybe I've just been lucky or maybe because I don't keep a hell of a lot of stuff on my PC (Net access, Word, a game or two), but I've never encountered serious problems on any PC I've owned.

I keep my windows boxen patched and behind a firewall, I run current anti-virus software (something mandated by my employer, so I'd run it even if I didn't want to), and I make frequent backups. The boxen I used for actual development are *nix boxen in my office at work, so I'm not terribly worried about them.
With all due respect to OS-religious types, they all have bugs and security holes, it's just a matter of time before someone finds them. Anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding him/herself or doesn't know much about software, period.
You manage your 'puters in as paranoid a fashion as you can without getting in the way of whatever work they're intended to do, and you plan for the worst, IMHO.
