Are you a musician?

What I mean is that can you play any instrument. If possible, please post which instrument.

I begin by telling that I play the trumpet.

... and I continue by saying that I play piano/organ and percussion.

BTW, I think there is already a thread on that subject.

I sing (which I guess kind of makes *me* an instrument). I also play piano, flute, some guitar, some hand percussion, and have been known to create music with just about anything at my disposal (hands, feet, table top, keys, silverware, crystal, coffee can---whatever. I discovered a neat way to play the "tar" drum by putting it in my mouth and singing through the drumhead. It makes long singing tones and they can be manipulated by airspeed and pitch. Very eerie and I'm not sure if anyone else ever uses the drum that way. It's limited, but cool).

I've already stated this on another thread, but here goes: I can play the flute, and various recorders. I can play the alto sax, but only in a half-assed, intermediate level fashion.

Tenor, alto and soprano. At one point I did it for a job... starting at 14 yrs old. Now at 30 and after about a five year hiatus, I wonder if I will get that call again that doesn't include the phrase "We would like you to continue sitting in with the band".

I get the "we've got a little group, so and so can't make it, great bunch of guys, lots of fun, got a 'gig,' doesn't pay anything" routine often.

I play alto saxophone (but i try as much as i can not to be another Charlie Parker, there's just to many of them)

I think that i have the spirit and the soul of a musician, but I'm not at the standard where i'd call myself a musician

Various types of guitar, some bass, keys. I'm getting paid more often, must be doing something right.

Hmmm, well a few "others" consider Ornette Coleman and Eric Dolphy to be "musicians". I tend to disagree.

When is a musician not a musician?

....when, like me, he can passably "play" keyboards but definitely hasn't progressed enough to develop his own style or even imitate his musical idols.

Hancock, Corea, Bob James, Joe Sample, Jeff Lorber, Oscar Peterson, McCoy Tyner, Keith Jarrett--those are piano/keyboard musicians. I'm not.
