Joshua Redman - Berklee Performance Center 5/6/2007

Caught Joshua Redman last night with a trio of Christian McBride and Brian Blade. All I can say is WOW!!!! These guys played their asses off. Mostly originals from Redman's new album (which apparently features this and a couple of other trios, as does the tour).

The group played with impressive dynamic control, thrilling the audience with technical and musical prowess. I had never heard Redman or McBride live and they were both startling in their command of their instruments, as was Blade, who I had seen previously with Wayne Shorter's group. I think Blade and Antonio Sanchez are the two drummers on the scene to watch these days.

As a group these guys played together amazingly well. Their ability to interact and change on a dime together, yet maintain a flexible, musical tone to the proceedings reminded me of the jarrett-peacock-dejohnette group when I saw them.

This tour is highly recommended.

That should be something to hear! Christian and Brian were both part of Joshua's first quartet (the only one missing is Brad Mehldau). They were clearly the "heir apparents" back in the early 90's... can't wait to hear them together in this incarnation!
