Friday's headliners The Sun Ra Arkestra is one of the most important ensembles in the history of music. Although Sun Ra himself is no longer with us, the group is lead by one of the key figures of the Arkestra legacy, saxophonist/flutist Marshall Allen, who joined the group in 1956. Many other current members joined in the '50s and '60s as well, often devoting their entire career to the Arkestra. For decades, the members of the Arkestra were so dedicated to Sun Ra's work that they lived communally to increase their understanding of the music; a tradition that continues today! This 15 piece band will cover all the territory in the world of sound, from the most outer limits to the simplest moments of beauty.
Saturday's headliners Sabir Mateen, Daniel Carter and Andrew Barker represent the finest stratum of New York's Free Jazz scene today. Although all three have decades of experience in a variety of musical settings, only in the last 5-10 years have they been garnering the recognition they deserve. Mateen and Carter have collaborated so much now, they've become one of the most powerful saxophone pairings in all of Jazz. Barker brings excitement to his "in the tradition" drumming like few others can.
