New York City Jazz Scene

Well, since nobody re-started this thread from the old board I think I'll step up to the plate. I hope it gets some play since I read it often.............

March 28 at the Jazz Standard

7:30pm, 9:30pm & 11:30pm

Dave Douglas Sextet

Dave Douglas (trumpet), Greg Tardy (saxophone, clarinet), Josh Roseman (trombone), Uri Caine (piano), James Genus (bass), Ben Perowsky (drums)

Tickets: $25 plus tax

The Sextet explores the craft of jazz composition and arranging by paying tribute to particularly influential members of the jazz canon. Their recording projects have paid homage to Booker Little, Wayne Shorter, and most recently, Mary Lou Williams. The band has toured in the United States and Europe and appeared at Brooklyn Academy of Music's Next Wave Festival. Their latest recording Soul on Soul is on RCA Victor.

I saw Tim Berne, Marc Ducret, Craig Taborn and Tom Rainey last week which I thought was pretty great. They were a little sketchy on some new tunes but the concept is loose enough that it didn't matter. Theirs is some very exciting, different and unpredictable music. I was tempted to go back a second time but but the trolls who guard the bridge to my bank made it impossible.

Helmut Lampshade was there- what did you think? When can we get together and play?

AND...

I'll be playing at the Jazz Gallery in a couple of weeks- Thursday, April 17th to be precise. The group will be Avishai E. Cohen on trumpet, Lance Murphy on Tenor sax, Chris Lightcap on bass, Damion Reid on drums and myself on trombone. Please come.

This is specifically for the dates of K.C. Bob's NY visit:

April 17 - Not to be missed -- Dave Burrell/Matthew Shipp double bill at Tonic. I'll be there for sure.

April 19 & 20 - Henry Threadgill's Zooid at Jazz Gallery.

April 21 & 22 - Steve Coleman & 5 Elements at Jazz Gallery.

Damn, would love to catch Burrell but have plans already after arriving. Threadgill or Parker/Lytton are me second picks but last pick would be Coleman. Oh to have so many choices in the city. My bro is set on Sunday night at Tonic so that will likely happen.

Pete, if I miss you this round I'll be back every other month or so. As much as I dug that Vietnamese place u took me to last time, I challenge you to fine me a decent Cambodian joint.

Listed below are the main reasons I missing living in NYC:

"On the New York jazz scene... the Heath Brothers are at the Village Vanguard through Sunday. The Claudia Acuna quintet Vanguard is at the Jazz Standard this week. Latin singer Albita is at the Blue Note.
There's a tribute to Lionel Hampton at Iridium this week featuring the Terry Gibbs quintet with David "Fathead" Newman, Joey DeFrancesco, Gerry Gibbs and Howard Alden. Pianist Eugene Maslov's trio opens the set each night.
The Jazz Gallery presents the Liberty Ellman quartet tonight. Trombonist Chris Washburne's SYOTOS Latin jazz band is at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe on Thursdays.
The Rachel Z trio is at Sweet Rhythm tonight. The John Hicks-Elise Woods sextet is at Birdland through Saturday with special guest Joe Lovano. The George Coleman quartet is at Smoke through Saturday. The Junior Mance trio opens The Jazz Gallery's new "Early Set @ The Jazz Gallery" series tonight."

Absolutely incredible variety of jazz available during just one week! The above list was "stolen" from the ArcaMax Newsletter.

And, IMO, that's not a particularly stellar NY jazz week...

David, I don't think that Hearsay is on that album. As you may know, Hearsay (Brett Sroka) plays trombone. He has a release of his own on the Fresh Sounds/New Talent label entitled "Hearsay". It's a good album that contains mostly original compositions by Brett. Jason Moran is on keyboards, btw. Not too shabby. I own two copies myself. One of them was given to me by Brett and the other I bought directly from him. I've posted a link below for all who want more information. Brett deserves our support...............

Thank you Jimmy, you're a good guy. I would love your support for my gig (on April 17th @ the Jazz Gallery), if any of you decide not to go to Tonic. Also if you're interested my website is www.brettsroka.com, there are some mp3's and stuff to read on there.

David- This will actually be my first time playing with Chris Lightcap, but I've been a fan of his on various records and we've been trying to play for a while. I like his stuff a lot, I just saw his group a few weeks ago. He's an interesting bass player who can easily move between mainstream and avant-garde. If you're interested his website is www.chrislightcap.com, it looks better than mine.

who's at Tonic? I'd love to hear your gig, Brett, but for me your competition is the Angelica Sanchez Quartet w/Tony Malaby, Drew Gress & Tom Rainey at Cornelia Street Cafe. Maybe I can pull off a doubleheader...

There's another tempting gig that week, Tue-Thu at the Jazz Standard: Peter Bernstein Plus 3 featuring Brad Mehldau, Larry Grenadier & Bill Stewart.

I wish I could argue with you James, but I saw Angelica Sanchez' group about a month ago at the Knit and it was great. I'm looking forward to her CD too. Let's just say that mine will be just as good though, and it shouldn't be to hard to check out both if you have the energy.

Brett, when are you going get yourself a friday or saturday night gig? Those weekday gigs are hard for me since I have to get my ass out of bed at 5:00AM every morning for work. I'll catch up with you one of these days, promise!....................

BTW, I notice in my last post that the album cover I posted yesterday has been replaced by a blank space with the dreaded red X in the corner. Wonder what's up with that...........................

It means the link you used no longer points to the image. I think either the image has been removed, or they changed the link to it at the website (for instance, if the pages have been redesigned), or possibly the Fresh Sounds server is down temporarily (the image is actually loaded each time from the original host server, not stored on JC's).

That makes sense, Pete. The link below the picture gives a "communication problem" message when I try to access it. Their server may be having problems..............

BTW, I notice that Hearsay's gig at the Jazz Gallery is on the day before Good Friday. Chances are that I won't be working that friday so I may be able to swing in to catch him at the Jazz Gallery on the 17th..............

Hey, James, that's an excellent idea. I think I'll go to the early set at Cornelia St. Cafe and to Brett's late set at the Jazz Gallery. Hope you don't mind me stealing your idea......................

I'm on for the Parker/Schlipp/Lytton show on 4/20.

Burrell is playing solo in Kingston, NY in the upcoming months. I think I'll see him there instead. Much nicer drive to boot!

Damn, I wish I'd looked at this before. I just ordered tickets to see "Hank Williams Lost Highway" for when??........ Thursday, April 17 of course!! Hey, can anyone tell me the *exact* times of all these gigs again?? I'll have my family in tow but both of my kids love music and play guitar, piano and clarinet. Well, Liz plays guitar, piano and clarinet and Catherine plays piano.

So, we could go from Hank to jazz. That's cool--typical of the listening in our house, with a lot of classical thrown in.

Pianist/composer Burton Greene is one of the first wave of downtown NYC's avant garde/free jazz musicians from the 1960s. He has played and recorded with Marion Brown, Alan Silva, Patty Waters and Pharoah Sanders, and was recorded on the legendary ESP Disk label (and a really rare one for Columbia!). For the past several years he has been living and working in Amsterdam, both solo and with Klezmokum. Since Greene doesn't get to the US much, his every appearance is an event. – Mark Keresman, Jazz Review

Marked by the near constant interweaving of the front-line (as opposed to solo trading between the horns), and a far ranging textural diversity (due in part to the multiple wind instruments mastered by Daniel and Sabir), Test is a collective creative improvising quartet based out of the NYC underground: figuratively and most often literally. They have performed on a regular basis for the past couple of years in the NYC subway; filling the rushing commuters various selves with anything ranging from joy to confusion; flustered looks to looks of revelation; responses depending of course on their attendant baggage.

Jump Arts Inc. is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to creating opportunities for revolutionary artists of different generations, backgrounds and experiences. Through the presentation of a diverse range of regularly scheduled events, Jump Arts showcases some of the most forward reaching musicians; dancers; and spoken-word and visual artists in New York City. Jump Arts is a volunteer-based collective of musicians, dancers and visual artists who work together to create opportunities to perform and show their own and others’ work. Jump Arts locates at a variety of spaces throughout New York City, creating new opportunities for emerging artists to present their work and introducing new audiences to these artists. These spaces have included cafes, private lofts and existing alternative art spaces

I saw Tom Harrell's group on Sunday at the VV. Per usual, Tom was wonderful and moving. If possible, I thought the band was even tighter than ever. Quincy Davis, Xavier's brother, who replaced Carl Allen on drums a couple of years ago, is really improving. He's taking more chances and succeeding and his chops and sense of interaction with the rest of the group are really geting better. It's so great to see a young player get better right before your eyes. Xavier's playing was beautiful. Oganna Okegwa's comping impressed me more than ever. He provided a swinging, compelling bass line to the solos which really stood out fo rme. Jimmy Greene was his "bad" self per usual.

The house was pretty well filled for the first set and the second set wasn't bad either. James Zollar set in for a bit on the second set and, although he played quite well, he had the unenviable situation of having to solo right after a beautiful, mesmerizing and exciting solo of Tom's which brought down the house.

I ddin't recognize most of the tunes the band played, all originals, except for some be-bop classics at the end when Zollar sat in. Perhaps they were mainly from Tom's latest "Live at the VV" which I haven't played to the degree that I know all the songs so well. Right now I'm listening to "Paradise" which I believe is my personal fave. It's just so beautiful. Tom's tone is just so unique and soul-stirring.

There's all kinds of good music coming up. On Thursday George Colligan will be at the Jazz Gallery with a great band. And then Joe Locke will be at Smoke this weekend. I haven't seen Joe in ages and I'm eager to try to check out his new band.

The VV has some great bands coming up too--Ted Nash's Odeon, Gary Bartz and then some real exciting groupings with Paul Motian as the leader during the JVC fest. in June. He has an electric be-bop band that I do not want to miss.

Did anyone else catch Tom this week?

Unfortunately, the Crispell-Peacock-Motian trio is the same night as Ornette's concert.

That Goerge Colligan gig on Thursday looks good. Gary Thomas doesn't seem to play that much and I've heard that Colligan writes some nice music.
