Computer (Laptop Screen Kaput) Troubles

Okay so the screen of my lovely trustworthy Toshiba satellite purchased 2003, warranty expired last fall, went dim (when I turn it on, I can see white Windows square very very faintly in background but that's it). This was proceeded by some Earthquake looking screen activity previous night, next morning is when it went dim.

Anyway...diagnostic at authorized repair center went as such, "bad news," says guy on the phone, "replacement screen $500 30-day warranty so buy a new computer"

Me: Hey, I only use it at home so what if I just bought a new cheaper screen as a peripheral?

Guy: Yeah, you could purchase Toshiba screen for $500 1-year warranty.

Me: That's the cheapest peripheral screen option?

Guy: Yeah.

So does anyone here (Toshiba satellite owner) know if that's true that I could only use Toshiba screen for my Satellite? I was hoping I could buy a cheap screen ($150) for interim - get all my stuff downloaded, will die without my Outlook - my whole life is in there - and then maybe purchase new pc next year. I have to admit when the adapter went out though, I purchased a couple universals with as many as 12-15 different jacks and Toshiba's "unique" jack alluded compatibility with them all.

I'm no computer tech and don't even own a laptop, but there are probably considerably more options available to you than were offered by Mister Repeats Himself @ authorized repair center.

For instance, I quickly found this new Toshiba screen available on eBay Express:

New Toshiba Laptop-LCD-Screen Panel 12.1" P000262810

$75.00 | Shipping: $16.95

I have no way of knowing whether it's compatible with your Toshiba, but I think you'll get my drift.

Here's a link with a lot of other new Toshiba replacement screens, none of which cost $500.00. You would need your model #, screen size, resolution, and a competent technician to install it, should you choose this route.

This seller even offers step-by-step screen removal instructions with photos.

Explore more options, including a replacement computer.

All of the data on your present laptop can easily be moved to a new computer, tippy.

If you only use it at home, all you need is a monitor (any monitor) with a cable. You should be able to plug it directly into the laptop.
