l'Off Festival de Jazz - Montréal

This is the 8th edition.

Here the text:

L’OFF Jazz Festival 8th edition

Québec has always been a vibrant leader on the international jazz scene.
A real reservoir of talents, Quebec’s scene is a model of diversity, vitality and originality. Since its creation, the mandate of the OFF Festival has been to honour all Quebec jazz artists, dedicating 10 days to them and their performances in a 100% jazz programme. Ja zz, defined in its purest form, combining tradition and aesthetics with a constant search for renewal and experimentation.

This year, we are particularly proud of all the invited groups. A range of generations and styles, coming together at three festival venues: L ion d’Or, O Patro Vys and P ub St Ciboire. You are invited to three locations, three atmospheres, three meeting points, from 5 to 11 p.m. Thirty-five concerts in all, many entirely free, offer an opportunity to discover jazz shows of quality.

In addition to the bands from the local scene, we have the enormous pleasure to invite artists from other Canadian provinces, United-States and Europe.
We are seizing the opportunity afforded by their stay in Montreal to organize two master classes in piano and singing for all levels.

In previous years, the public has demonstrated its confidence in the OFF Festival’s programming and we thank you for this. We hope to see people
out in large numbers at this 8th edition, and we wish you an enjoyable festival.

A word of thanks to the guest musicians, to the new Board of Directors and
to the volunteers who give their time, energy and dedication to this fabulous project. We would also like to thank each of our faithful partners without whom this festival could not take place.

Christophe Papadimitriou

President

It could be one of my choice...

This could be a good appearance:

Kris Davis Quartet (New-York)
9. 30 pm – Lion d’Or
15 $ or 20 $ with the 8 pm show (25$ at the door)

New-Yorker pianist Kris Davis ends her tour in Montreal. With her quartet, she explores the balance between free improvisation and composition. Her writing and piano feats have been described as adventurous and refreshing. Her latest album, The Slightest Shift, has led to real success in the United-Sates.

Tony Malaby : saxophones
Kris Davis : piano
Eivind Opsvik : doublebass∙
Jeff Davis :drums

Freetoojazz -

Thanks for posting this information on L'off. It used to run during "the big festival" and that made it tough. I'm thrilled they are offering it this year at a different time.

Lion d'Or is such a gorgeous place - and so full of history. I love to take visitors there, particularly if they've never been. Of course, they often have to endure my "Le Bolduc" stories on the ride home...

Thanks for posting this.

For the last couple of years, I've enjoyed the Off more than the actual FIJM, so it's been hard to choose where to go. This year is a double fiesta with both festivals overlapping.

So many wonderful musicians, many of them already working in Montreal and sorely neglected outside the festival period.

This week, I went to a super evening of jazz at the Diese Onze, and there were only about a dozen people present, at most. Antoine Berthiaume was playing, a wonderful, wonderful young guitarist. Remi-Jean Leblanc was on bass, and Robbie Kuster was on drums. It was so beautiful, I didn't even stop to drink my beer throughout the set.

Now I look forward to the opening evening of the Off, with one of my favourite pianists, Steve Amirault.

An embarrassment of riches.

I'm getting agita (sp? - The lil?) trying to decide between Joel Miller at Lion D'or (perhaps the nicest venue in Montreal) - and Carlinos Brown on the street downtown...
