A student of Joe Henderson and Bob Brookmeyer, Danish saxophonist Lotte Anker - a member of New Music Orchestra, Pierre Dorges' Ensemble and Barry Guy's Orchestra - visits to lead a wonderful NY-based trio. Features Tim Berne-collaborator Craig Taborn and the hypnotic drummer Gerald Cleaver.

The first in two double-bills featuring a very rare visit from Noah Howard, best known for his legendary recording "The Black Ark" (copies of which have recently sold for over $300 on online auction sites) as well as his work with Frank Wright, Misha Mengelberg and Archie Shepp. For this special concert, he reconnects with innovator and pianist Dave Burrell, who performed together on the 1966 groundbreaking ESP recording "At Judson Hall".

One of Ars Nova's favorite ensembles, Norwegian trio In The Country features pianist Morten Qvenild, best known as a member of Susanna and the Magical Orchestra, Shining and Jaga Jazzist. The trio's newest album "Losing Stones, Collecting Bones” (Rune Grammofon) was recorded in the legendary Atlantis Studio in Stockholm, home of the first classic Abba recordings, and features downtown NYC icon Marc Ribot.

The second in two double-bills featuring a very rare visit from Noah Howard.
This performance features drummer Muhammad Ali (brother of Rashied Ali), who worked with Howard on "The Black Ark" with Sirone and Arthur Doyle. This is a once-in-a-lifetime event.

Wow. Has Muhammad been playing out recently, prior to this date?

The trio Of Lotte Anker/Craig Taborn/Gerald Cleaver was one of the highlights at last weekend's Bohemian National Home Festival of Jazz and Improvised Music in Detroit. I was stunned by this set. I'd heard Lotte before in a trio with Marilyn Crispell and Gerald and thought it was nice enough, but this one took off from minute one. Taborn's hands were a blur at times as he played sometimes furious, sometimes gentle piano stylings that were always creative and serving to shape the music and explore new territories. All three were in excellent form and very complimentary of one another. I've not heard Lotte play the way she did before. It was just excellent!

Noah Howard was also on hand for the festival and despite coming on close to 2am after close to seven hours of music has been presented AND following two sets of Arkestra music, played a very strong trio set with Hakim Jami and Bobby Kapp.

Sounds like a great double bill this Friday.

I always miss the real good stuff :-(
