Larry: I'm still fairly new at playing the Caro, so if you let me know later on where I began to mishandle it, I'd appreciate it.
You know what I lose to consistently on ICC? The Dutch. I had an expert friend who always played the King Pawn gambit against it (Fromms?), and I'm thinking of trying it myself.
And you know there's blitz and there's blitz. If I restricted my play to 5/12, which is what I put out when I 'seek', my blitz rating would be several hundred points higher. But most of the available games are at 2/12, and I play that a lot and run out of time game after game. I've stopped playing anything under 20/0 without increments. My standard rating is roughly the same as my old USCF rating, high 1600s and 1700s.
I'm going to go running, get ready for tonight's dance ...

Steve,
So far, so good with your Caro. Mone is avoiding the serious stuff with 2.Nf3.
I play blitz at the 3 0 time control, and bullet at 1 0. I'm a speed junkie on ICC. I haven't played a game in a few months, I guess. I used to play standard on there years ago, but not in a long time. My blitz/bullet ratings are in the 2100-2200 range and I think my standard was about there, too. I just never have time to play anymore and there's competition for the online connection from the house. I used to study this game and I don't do that anymore, either. So bullet and blitz are a nice way to hide the fact that I can't really play anymore, because I have a knack for playing really fast.
It's a shame, because a year or two ago I was routinely beating IMs at 5 minute chess, but now I'm too far off form to do that. One thing I do to get my "chess chops" back is play without sight of the board. I do that for large portions of these games (also because I sometimes don't have a board handy). It's not that hard to do, and the very best GMs now compete in an annual tournament that includes some games played blindfold.
It's all good.

I can't take it. I am antsy to play again already. I can never just watch a game, I always want to play too.
So, will a title unification involving Kasparov/Kramnik/Ponomariov ever happen? Kramnik has had his title for 3 years now and has done next to nothing with it. Time for a big match between heavyweights. I'd like to see a Kramnik/Kasparov rematch, followed by a unification with Ponomariov. Either of the Ks would bitch slap Pono and then we'd have a real champion again.
One thing I've noticed about the chess world today is that it's more and more a young man's game, and it's most noticeable at fast time controls. These 13 and 14 year olds like Radjabov and Nakamura are amazing at such an early age and they are action/blitz chess monsters.

I got back on ICC last night to try and play some bullet games. Jesus Christ. I lost to games to 1400s last night. I was much better after a few hours (it's as addictive as crack playing bullet on ICC), but still way off form. I will be decent again in a couple of days. My analysis is always terrible after a couple months off, but it comes back kind of quick.

ICC is addictive at ANY speed! I'm starting to try to limit the number of games I play at night, or all of a sudden it's 4 AM and I haven't gotten any work done.

What a bizarre continuation this is turning into. The last two moves caught me completely by surprise.
You guys are weird.
Dogmatic like Siegbert Tarrasch,

I'll tell you a weird-looking move in the Caro that's been giving me a lot of trouble -- in the main line, after the swapping, I chase the white N with my bishop but instead of going to g3 the knight goes back to c3, and then white plays g4, which is an ugly-looking move but it harasses the bishop and winds up being a problem for me. I might have to crack a book on that one.

Huh? Steve, you better check your notation. My board is showing that you've got a knight in the way.

Right, I looked at Nf3 and left it up!
Back in a bit.
