Unconscious Collective on tour
Unconscious Collective will embark on a tour Sunday, June 24. The Collective features Stefan Gonzalez on drums, Aaron Gonzalez on bass, Devon Wells on flute, and Greg Prickett on guitar. They describe themselves this way:
Unconscious Collective is one of the few improvisational/free jazz oriented musical acts around the N. Texas area. We all come from different musical backgrounds(classical training, punk/rock, experimental, and jazz all play their part in our sound), but function as a musical unit: throwing sounds around, intuitively putting it all in the right place. Past performances/recording sessions have included guests such as Alvin Fielder, Rodrigo Amado, Carl Smith, Leena Conquest, Omar Alvarado, Chris Parker, and Dennis Gonzalez.
They will be touring with Just Another Consumer and Warcola. Look up the venues and go see 'em!

I look forward to it, Jesse. Thanks!
I don't know much about the band protocols on this tour because they all worked the details out while I was in Europe a coupla weeks ago. I'm sort of out of the loop.

It was a great pleasure to spend time with Stefan and Aaron, and Unconcious Collective guitarist Greg. The scene was, my presence excepted, unadulterated punk. Four bands played-I won't provide a blow by blow, as much of the sound was soupy and garbled, and various performers were struggling with various musical maladies. I enjoyed the Collective much more last October when I booked them at the Rogue Buddha Galery, for several reasons. I don't think the lads were thrilled with the scene either.
The camaraderie was sweet, however. All three of those guys are remarkably focused, given the party network they rely on for gigs, on making creative music. They are also generous to a fault, finding something to support in each musical unit along on this tour. Quite honestly, being with them is familiar, familial. Greg said he's trying to get something going in Chicago, where he lives, with Kevin Drumm, a simpatico interest.
Aaron can crack me up with his delivery of observations about shit. Stefan cuts to the heart of things very succinctly, refreshing, a little guileless.
I threatened them with a visit to Dallas next winter.
You have solid and substantive reason to be proud of them, Dennis.

Thanks, Jesse, for that report. I wondered about the places they're playing on this tour...and about the incredible number of bands and the very little time per gig.

Looks like the tour fell apart, unfortunately. The crew that Unconscious Collective was traveling with didn't arrive in time in New York to play that show, although it seems as if though they got a great reception in Philadelphia. But the final blow was the breakdown of Warcola's touring van in Atlanta today, when they should've been traveling to memphis for the final show, with a broken transmission. Stefan says that although the van was supposed to be under warranty, nobody in Atlanta would honor it. So all members of all three groups, Unconscious Collective, Just Another Consumer, and Warcola chipped in to rent a U-Haul to tow the equipment behind the brimming full (of people) Unconscious Collective van.
To add to the trouble, we tried calling Aaron and Stefan most of the afternoon, but their cellphone batteries had died. We finally got a report from Stefan about 7:30 this evening. He had to use someone else's cellphone, and they're driving all night from Atlanta to get here by sometime in the afternoon on Independence Day.

There is nothing more glamorous than the musicians-on-tour thing.
Give my best to the lads, Dennis. Allie and I were talking about you all not an hour ago!

Very sweet...I will give them my best, since they arrived 'bout an hour-and-a-half ago, tired and a bit under the weather.
