Creative Differences is proud to announce the return of legendary South African drummer Louis Moholo-Moholo to An die Musik.
Moholo will be joined by one of the leading lights of the creative jazz scene, pianist Marilyn Crispell, for two exclusive concerts!
Louis Moholo-Moholo is especially known for his association with the Blue Notes, the South African multi-racial band, which was forced to relocate to Europe in 1964 due to rising racial tensions in the region. The band eventually settled in London where Moholo proceeded to become an integral figure on the international improv scene, performing and touring with a vast array South African, European and American improvisers, including Steve Lacy, Harry Miller, Evan Parker, Archie Shepp and Keith Tippett, among many others. He did not return to South Africa again until 1993 when he performed with is own group, Viva La Black. In September 2005 he relocated to his native Cape Town, where he presently resides.
“Music is the healing force of the universe. The political disease that was there (South Africa) needed music to heal it up. I'm speaking from a musical point of view, and for my brothers.” - Louis Moholo-Moholo – in All About Jazz
Marilyn Crispell was schooled in classical music, studying piano from the age of 7 at Peabody Conservatory. Graduating in piano and composition from the New England Conservatory of Music, she came late to jazz, but by 1978 was teaching at Karl Berger's Creative Music Studio. There she met many musicians with whom she has since worked, including Roscoe Mitchell, Wadada Leo Smith, Oliver Lake and, most crucially, Anthony Braxton.
Extensive touring and recording with Braxton raised her critical profile and paved the way for numerous albums of her own for a plethora of little labels. Crispell's recordings have ranged from solo improvisations to programmes of Coltrane's music to performances of contemporary composition (by Manfred Niehaus, Robert Cogan, Barry Guy and others). Documented encounters with improvisers have included meetings with Fred Anderson, Evan Parker, Peter Brötzmann, Charles Gayle, Irčne Schweizer, Eddie Prévost, Billy Bang, Tim Berne and the massed cast of the London Jazz Composers Orchestra. Amongst her influences, Crispell has cited Coltrane, Bach, Webern, Braxton, Cecil Taylor, Sun Ra, Thelonious Monk and Annette Peacock.
Moholo will also perfrom on Friday 29th June w.Fred Lonberg-Holm and Marshall Allen at International House of Philadelphia
