Ron, Ron, Ron... (sigh) Shame on you for passing on the info on this scarily voluminous sale. You, sir, are to blame for the unwarranted disintegration of my July budget.

Sorry, guys. I knew that it would be rough on some.
I had to really stifle myself from going completely nuts.
Does anyone have any comments on the titles I chose?

I ordered your first 3 choices, too. I'm confident about half of my choices. I must have a few dogs in there, but I needed to spike up, as I haven't been to a show (including missing the Vancouver Jazz Fest completely over the last 10 days) or bought music in months... so here I rationalize as a good junkie must...

Cem, you're clearly out-of-control, buddy. Don't blame your urges on me. Plus, you live in a idyllic setting, so relax.
Damn, now I wish that I'd ordered David Liebman's Bookends CD, too. It's a duo with pianist Marc Copland, and the samples I just heard sound wonderful and fresh.

Cem -- Madness!
This thread is like holding out a bag of skag at the NA meeting. Just so happens, however, that I received a $25 gift yesterday. Now it's gone. But these are on their way:
Morton Feldman -- Early Piano Works
Joe Maneri -- Out Right Now
Joe McPhee -- Oleo
Arnold Schonberg -- Works For Piano

I woke up this morning and, ahem... had an itch to scratch... order another 6, including a box, I'd been eying ... so it's an even 40 now.
Ran Blake Something to Live For (1) @ $4.99
Morton Feldman Early Piano Works (1) @ $4.99
Per Henrik Wallin Proklamation / Farewell to Sweden (1) @ $6.49
Daniele D'Agaro Strandjutters (1) @ $4.99
Dane Rudhyar Works for Piano (1) @ $4.99
Albert Ayler Holy Ghost (1) @ $74.99
Really excited about the Ayler, in particular. Curious about so many. Ahem, the dollar is almost par, man... what can I do?
This music will help me through my post-Jewels & Binoculars-tour depression in a couple of weeks.

I just bought the complete MJQ with Giuffre (+ Teddy Charles, Pee Wee Russell, etc.) from Jazz Loft, which is neither on Hat nor on sale.
But I do appreciate the posts, boys, and I'm already starting to feel better about all those Fania resissues I just bought!

There's still time, Ron, though the clock is ticking. Yes, this is a marvelous CD. I've had it in my collection for quite some time and it's one of those discs that often makes it's way into the CD player.
I too ordered the Ran Blake. Others were Clusone Trio An Hour With..., Myra Melford Even the Sounds Shine and Cecil Taylor One Too Many Salty Swift. My ruined budget is obviously somewhat smaller to begin with than that of some folks.
Oh, and your choice of Thingin is a good one, Ron. It's a unique recording in Konitz's scarily huge discography, and another hat I return to quite often.
EDIT: Well, somehow I missed the listing of the Myra Melford/Han Bennink duo CD Eleven Ghosts the first time around... Just ordered that one too.

That's a great disc. I also love John Law- Abacus, Melford-Alive in the House of Saints and most of the Ellery discs. Several of the McPhee's are excellent, too as is the CT.

Thanks, Bill. I may have to spring for the Bookends CD from Liebman.
I'm also open to suggestions from any of you who are hip to my musical tastes for other CDs I may have overlooked.
I'll probably be placing a small 2nd order ASAP, though.

Ron, Myra Melford's Alive in the House of Saints & Even the Sounds Shine would be up your alley, I think. Her playing is blues-drenched & I find her inside/outside approach and writing very compelling and inviting. She plays with some of the greater younger players of the past 20 years. I saw the trio a bunch of times live in the 90's and loved them. She has Cecil Taylorisms that I love, not sure how you feel about that?
My dealings with Jewels & Binoculars, recently, reminded me (same bassist, Lindsey Horner) of how that trio of hers (with Reggie Nicholson on drums) needs to get back together & tour. Even The Sounds Shine is an "extended ensemble" recording with Dave Douglas & Marty Ehrlich. Quite powerful.
Btw, Myra took a lot of her titles from poetry & literature, from the liner notes / from a Fernando Pessoa poem:
In Broad Daylight Even The Sounds Shine
In broad daylight even the sounds shine
On the repose of the wide field they linger
It rustles, the breeze silent.
I have wanted, like sounds, to live by things
And not be theirs, a winged consequence
Carrying the real far.

I agree with Cem about Melford's early stuff. I'm less enamored with her recent releases.
I went back and added three more:
Sun Ra Sunrise In Different Dimensions
Matthew Shipp Expansion, Power, Release
Matthew Shipp Gravitational Systems

Ron--
What about
Max Roach & Anthony Braxton
One in Two-Two in One?
I don't know it, but maybe the other kids could tell you what it's like. That Braxton guy is versatile and can be quite simpatico.
I'm in serious financial peril, but I'm thinking of springing for One Too Many Salty Swift (Cecil Taylor) and maybe one or two others. Yeah, thanks a lot, buddy.
Edit: I could have sworn that the Roach/Braxton album was one of the sale selections, but it's not; it's $19.99. Never mind.

Rita, that's a great duo in my opinion. There's one passage that kills me every time: Braxton is huffing away on contrabass clarinet, and Roach switches to triangle. So perfect.

The problem with hat is that if you're not careful, you'll end up with their entire catalog on your shelves... Anyway, I went for these:
John Zorn: Cobra
Myra Melford: Alive in the House of Saints
Anthony Ortega: Scattered Clouds (BTW, has anyone heard his recent hat release?)
François Raulin: Trois Plans sur la Comète
Max Nagl: Big Four
Mat Maneri: So What?
Clusone 3: An Hour With...

I WAS trying to avoid looking at this sale (I already have the choice Melfords, Blake, CT), but seeing Felix list Cobra made me break down.
So I'm in for:
John Zorn -- Cobra
Melford/ Bennink -- Eleven Ghosts
Pauline Oliveras -- The Roots of The Moment
Lou Harrison -- Labyrinth

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone.
Now it's crunch time. I'll let you know what others I chose.
Also on my list of possibles, stretching my taste/library were:
Morton Feldman - Early Piano Works
Joe Maneri - Coming Down The Mountain
Comments?

Ron: Is this is your first Joe Maneri? If so, this'll be a stretch for you. Dahabenzapple, Tales of Rohnlief and some of the others are easier to get into. I like Coming Down The Mountain, but much of it is very slow and very mournful. Plus of course it's Maneri so he's on his own microtonal system.

Yes, it would be my first Joe Maneri, Steve.
Thanks for the heads up.
Unless someone offers compelling reasons for me to add Morton Feldman's Early Piano Works, I think I'll go with:
David Liebman - Bookends
Myra Melford - Alive In The House Of Saints (Expanded)
Myra Melford - Even The Sounds Shine

It was my first Maneri, too, and I'd say it's not going to be a further stretch than any if it's your first. I liked it very much and now have all of his Hats. It's free music, though. So, it's anybody guess what you'll think. I found it very musical, including the drumming, which I think you'll find interesting and colorful.
Incidentally, Mr Maneri told me that the title is meant "as in when you're coming down the mountain into the valley and you don't want to."
