This experimental outfit comprises two intensely inventive trumpeters (Herb Robertson and Dave Ballou) and a flexible rhythm team (the drummer Tom Rainey and the bassist Drew Gress).
Debut performance of a new collaborative band featuring special notated compositions and group improvisations. Recording live to be released at a later date on Ruby Flower Records
The concept of this stellar quartet came up with conversations between Herb and Dave during their performances with "The Satoko Fugii Big Band West" whom Dave and Herb have been members in the trumpet section since the beginning. With mutual admiration for each other's playing characteristics they always wanted to perform together in a small band setting. This quartet with Michael Formanek/Drew Gress on bass and Tom Rainey on drums will be the end result of these discussions. As this quartet is in its formative stages, Robertson and Ballou have also discussed the composing aspects for the group. Herb is opting for a total graphical notation system in his compositions for the group. Dave will incorporate graphics along with standard notation to keep the varietal circumstances open. With graphic notation and plenty of improvisation this quartet will be different from all other groups that these musicians play in. This coming Spring will bring about it's debut concert with a live recording on the spot and to be released on Ruby Flower Records in the near future. Keep your ears wide open.
