Thanks Steve - very nice lineup of releases. Looking forward particularly to Food, Steve Tibbetts and Rypdal.

Just curious Steve, what's your prefered listening format?
Do you see any future (generally or for ECM) for physical high def audio delivery via Blu Ray Audio for example?
Thanks

Well I have so many CDs and LPs that I'm not much tempted by other formats for home listening. Don't own an iPod.
Blu Ray - As you probably know, some people in 'The Industry' are now predicting that Blu Ray will provide the last format for physical delivery for music, before Download Only is the order of the day. Although similar things were said about SACD I think there probably is more chance of Blu Ray catching on...

Thanks for the release update, Steve.
Steve Tibbetts has been a favorite guitarist since my friend introduced me to his Frammis initial release, and the Frammis version of Yr (interesting how it is a different mix than the one released on ECM). I still think that Safe Journey was his best (at least the impact of his overdriven guitar on that first cut was so powerful).
How would you describe his new release - the quieter side (Northern song/Cholying Droma types), or the kick butt screaming guitar of Fall of us All? And I assume his hand healed OK after his accident??
One last question (I am a bug about this one) - any sign of Julian Priester's Polarization on CD at some point?

Tibbetts: quiet, reflective, acoustic, with some nice bouzouki playing, as well as the guitars and kalimba. Marc Anderson on percussion, steel drums and gongs. Just the two of them. Good album of...lilting, dreamscape folk music, something like this.
Priester: no signs but I expect we'll do it one day.
best
Steve

Thanks so much, Steve. The Tibbetts sounds like something that will be a regular on my listening cycle! Can't wait....
And I will be patient and wait for the Priester, knowing that it will see the light of digital format day at some point!

Hi Steve
I was reading an on-line article by Steve Smith "40 Years Old, a Musical House Without Walls"
In the feature it mentions a 3rd forthcoming collaboration of Jan Garbarek /Hilliard Ensemble
“Officium Novum,” is due in 2010.
Are you able to shed any light on this?
I was also wondering if there are any plans for a further recordings from Dino Saluzzi /Rosamunde Quartet planned, Kultrum w/strings has remained a firm favorite of mine since it's release back in '98
And is David Darlings ECM1974 due in 2010?

Yes, “Officium Novum” is the title of a new album to come from Garbarek and the Hilliards. Recorded last year in Sankt Gerold, it will be released this autumn, when the saxophonist and singers will be on tour together.
Kultrum etc. The Rosamunde Quartet disbanded a few months ago. Cellist Anja Lechner continues to play with Dino in duo, and in a new trio - also including Dino’s brother saxophonist/clarinetist Felix Saluzzi. In May, ECM has an album of Dino playing with the Metropole Orchestra from Holland, and both Anja and Felix also appear on that. The music is all by Dino, and the album is called “El Encuentro”.
David Darling: that project’s not yet completed, so I can’t predict when release date will be...
best, Steve

Yes. Still to come is an album with works of composer Boris Yoffe.

Hi Steve
Like you I am mainly CD and LP based but nowadays also have MP3 files and lossless downloads. I have time for all of them in their own way especially MP3 for portability but I would be very sad if we went download only. The combination of a high end audio system and ECM japanese CDs in SHM eg Timeless/Abercrombie and Ring/Gary Burton or the alternative Blu Spec format is quite stunning. I can't think of any media player for downloads which comes anywhere close at the moment. Also with downloads, all it takes is a hard drive crash to wipe out a large chunk of your precious collection unless it's backed up onto something else which rather defeats the object. It's a great shame that neither Blu Spec (not Blu Ray) nor SHM CD formats are available outside Japan because in general they offer far superior quality to conventional CDs and unlike SACD play on normal CD players.

My iPod is the 160gb classic and does not have many MP3's. I use it for traveling (great for airplanes) and jogging. Throw away the uncomfortable plastic earbuds, get a good set of phones or buds and load it with lossless audio (Apple Lossless or wav) and it's the best portable music source available. It is my opinion MP3's suck and are "for the kids".

Steve - I have heard there might be a new release from Keith Jarrett and Charlie Haden called Jasmine. Can you provide any insight as to what we can expect from this.
Thanks

Early in 2007, Jarrett was asked to contribute to a Haden documentary ("Rambling Boy") and they played briefly together, for the first time since the 1976 break-up of the American Quartet . A few months later, Jarrett invited Haden to his home studio and they recorded in duo over a four day period. "Jasmine" comprises the material they liked best from these sessions. Emphasis is on standards and love songs, but the overall feel and atmosphere is perhaps closer to Jarrett's solo "Melody At Night..." than anything else in his discography. Intimate, then, and deeply melodic.
The album is being released in May.

Do you know when "Sounds & Silence" will be released on DVD, will it come out on the ECM Cinema Imprint?, I was surprised Holozan wasn't released via that route at the time

This documentary, which follows Manfred Eicher to diverse productions around the globe, is an independent film made by Swiss directors Norbert Wiedmer and Peter Guyer, and I'm not up to date on the DVD plans. I'm sure that when they find a home for it, ECM will help to make the DVD available (as was the case with the "Holozän" DVD, released by Suhrkamp, which can also be bought through the ECM web shop). The "Sounds & Silence" film gets its first US showing next month, by the way, in the context of the San Francisco Jazz Festival.

New recordings are planned with both - the Wasilewski Trio is in the studio in August, Enrico some time in the autumn...

Steve
I am late to this thread but I'd like to add my thanks to ECM for enriching my life since I started buying ECM on vinyl all those years ago.
One little thing I would like to see re-released in its entirety - Odyssey by Terje Rypdal. Happy that I've got a vinyl copy but is there any chance of a double CD release so that we can have all the music this time?
Again much thanks for a ton of inspired music.
It's all good!!

Allanmcf,
There's a Rypdal box set coming later this year. It's a 4cd set with "Whenever I Seem to be Far Away", the complete "Odyssey", and "After The Rain".
I'll have to determine what I'm going to do myself since I own everything except the elusive "Rolling Stone" track, which I transferred years ago from vinyl.

Whoa, Food with Fennesz on ECM?! Yes.
Hey Steve, quick question - where does ECM get their vinyl lacquers cut and duplicated (if different)?
Thanks!

We're currently using Schnitt-Studio Brüggemann in Frankfurt - http://www.sst-ffm.de/
And have also recently used Celebrate Records, in Stollberg.

Hi Steve,
I picked up the latest Paul Motian release this week, and I'm enjoying it quite a bit.
Did ECM record the entire stay at the Vanguard, and is there any consideration being given to another release of material at some point?
As an alternative, it would be cool if there was the ability for completists to be able to download an entire set or sets for some reasonable price.
Is ECM recording this years version of the trio with Greg Osby?
Thanks

(a) Yes,all recorded. Release of more material not discussed, as far as I know. (b) I understand the Completist Urge, as it comes upon me, too, from time to time, but the material released represents the preferences of artist and producer. And sometimes less is more, even in improvisation. (c) No. Nothing against Mr Osby, but there is considerable Motian-related material already in preparation, including things already mentioned here - like Konitz/Mehldau/Haden/Motian and Kikuchi/Morgan/Motian...

Thanks Jazzylisp for the intel on Rypdal. Good news indeed. Heard a snippet from the new Tibbetts album. Very nice stuff. Just love that ECM acoustic guitar sound.
It's all good!
