John Abercrombie - Non-ECM/Old-ECM

I notice JA has a new trio CD out with Eddie Gomez and drummer Gene Jackson. Structures. On Chesky records. Looks like pretty straight ahead stuff.
Anyone heard it?

I really enjoyed his work on Mark Egan's "As We Speak", also trio setting.

I see "Arcades" has resurfaced on Amazon. Still an expensive import and I'll probably kick myself for passing it up again.

Oh, and I recently picked up a knock-off he did back in the 90s with Dr. Lonnie Smith doing tunes by Jimmi Hendrix. _That_ is an oddball if ever there was one.

I've got that Lonnie Smith does Jimi record, with John doing the Jimi part. Pretty cool actually. I also like the same group doing Coltrane's music...definitely similar to McLaughlin's fine "After the Rain" album.

John has a life-long love of the sound of a guitar with a Hammond B3. He certainly has explored many of the possibilities and coaxed more dense texture out of the combination than anyone. And Dan Wall is one of the most unique B3 players around. I think his organ trio work is sadly overlooked by much of the jazz community who have grown up in the shadow of Jimmy Smith.

John Mclaughlin's After the Rain is a good (non-ECM) session with a similar line-up. Mostly straightahead playing by McLaughlin, but stimulating nonetheless.
