Preservation Hall Jazz Band

Preservation Hall Jazz Band, c. mid-1990's, Brooklyn College, NY.

I hate to categorize a group with a history like that on an impression based on one performance, but I saw them at a concert about 12 or years ago and walked out after 30 minutes. They started out OK, with one or two good tunes, then it started going downhill. There were many seniors in the audience, and they played ingratiating, old "standards", not New Orleans music and not done with much effort or tradition at all. If this was not irritating enough, they further wasted time by entertaining the crowd by allowing children from the audience to come and "dance" on the stage. Oh, yes, the program hand-out said something to the effect that the PHJB sizes-up the audience to determine the evening's venue. Just a word to the wise. It's a shame, because they can really play when they let loose.
