Why do you ask? What's up, Doc?

There are several drummers here, but they can speak for themselves. I'm pretty sure there was also a favorite drummer thread already that pretty much "beat" the subject to death. But that's no reason not to start a new one, I suppose.

I play bass, which means my ears automatically gravitate to the drums. I also play steering wheel drums, which is great for my driving.

Yo, Bugs-

I'm a jazz drummer (I guess), though I prefer to think of myself as simply a drummer, irrespective of genres. Jazz expression is my first love, without question, however. I've played drums and drum set for over 50 years.

I also teach drumming and love drummers, especially ones with real talent who are not ego-driven.

I have a "new" jazz drummer who's really impressed me -- Jochen Rueckert, who has contributed substantially to pianist Marc Copland, along with bassist Drew Gress. He has flown under my radar for years . . . until very recently.

To Pete's list, I'd add:

Hilary Jones

And don't forget that Karen Carpenter started out in a jazz combo.

And to Pete's list I'll add:

Allison Miller

Allison is one of the most exciting young drummers I've heard in a long time. I had the opportunity to see and meet Allison a couple of years ago when she accompanied saxophonist Virginia Mayhew to Alaska for Jazz Week at the University of Alaska Anchorage. She's incredibly talented.

Allison recently released her deblut album as a leader -- 5AM Stroll, featuring all original compositions or arrangements by Allison. On the date are Ray Drummond, Bruce Barth, Steve Wilson and Virginia Mayhew.

No doubt all the drummers mentioned here are great! It's just personal tastes. The only thing in my opinion is mentioning guys like Brian Blade and Lewis Nash on a list with Philly Joe, Tony ect.. is out of place. Taking nothing away from Brian and Lewis but cats like Tony, Philly Joe, Elvin and Blakey were the masters of this music. AGAIN it's personal though and everyone is entitled to their opinion. Nash and Blade are both great.

Jonathan Blake is a great, younger-ish, drummer, imo. Also, Marcus Gilmore (Roy Haynes' grandson) is also quite talented. Glasper's drummer, Dameon Reid, as well. Of course, who could argue with Nasheet Waits, Brian Blade, Antonio Sanchez or Joey Baron, just to name a few.

Nasheet and Eric Harland are my favorite "young" guys. Every time some one tells me about some young guy who was the best live drummer they've ever seen but don't know their name..."young guy" I say "Eric Harland?" and 9 times out of 10 they say "YEAH!"

Those lists above are all nice/great and I agree with all of those picks, but it'd be nice (do I have to play the part of Preacher here?) to see people find out about Hamid Drake (he's been covered in DB and Jazztimes so even the casual jazz fans should know about him) or Kjell Nordstrom or even going back to the "European Tony" which is...

??? come on!

What about Matt Wilson? I'd put him right up there with all those other names.

Cymbal Groove - not sure why you couldn't put Blade or Nash up there with those guys...Those guys are all great and I love their playing, but they just had the luck of coming first (and coming up with all that stuff) - Blade and Nash can play amazing things and have consistantly played great throughout the years.

Eric McPherson (ANOTHER young badass who is right up there) was talking about the moment you know you're a great player - an older musician told him "It's when *every* note you play is important, has meaning." And he realized he couldn't just "coast" - and you can tell he doesn't! He's not just soloing all the time, but everything he does has a reason for it - just like Blade and Nash, and all those greats before.

I don't think it's fair to just put the older guys on some unreachable pedestal...There are players making it happen now, and are just as great as those other guys.

Maybe it's a taste thing with their styles? Because I know certain other guys who everyone thinks are "great" who I can't get with because of the music they play. I have never really liked listening to Peter Erskine (but I use his sticks!) because I don't like the music he is playing (of what I've heard) - and I know a million guys who would say "WHAT? you need to go listen to blah blah blah" or "He's way better than you punk!" but - It doesn't speak to me - and there are a million other songs/players/albums/etc that *do* speak to me. So I will listen to/find those...

So me *personally* I don't put him in their catagory, because of that - but I know he's a great player, great technique, great touch, etc, but I don't dig him...

I am just rambling now. nighty nite!
