For one year only, the annual Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition will be presented in Los Angeles. While The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC undergoes renovations this fall, southern California residents will have the rare opportunity to see the world's most talented young trumpeters compete for more than $60,000 in scholarships and prizes.
The 2007 Trumpet Competition, sponsored by Cadillac and GMAC Financial Services, will be held on October 27 at UCLA's Schoenberg Hall and October 28 at the Kodak Theatre. The illustrious panel of judges will include Herb Alpert, Terence Blanchard, Roy Hargrove, Quincy Jones, Hugh Masekela, and Clark Terry. Ticket information will be posted later this summer on the Institute's Web site at
www.monkinstitute.org.
Since 1987, the Institute has presented the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, the most prestigious jazz competition in the world. Gifted young musicians from around the world compete for scholarships that help pay tuition for college-level jazz education studies and provide funds for private, specialized instruction.
