Fletcher Henderson to be honored - Aug 11

Jazz legend to be honored

A special day in honor of the legacy of Fletcher Henderson will be held in Fletcher's hometown of Cuthbert, Ga., Saturday, Aug. 11, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. (EDT) on the town square. According to an event spokesperson, Henderson is credited with many firsts in music including the first jazz band.
He was the first to put jazz arrangements on paper.

Every musician of Henderson's era either played in his band or wanted to.

In a 1926 issue of the Harvard Crimson, it is stated that Fletcher's arrangements of the song "Sometimes I'm Happy" for the Benny Goodman band is considered to be one of the five greatest ever written. Duke Ellington called Fletcher "The King."

The arrangement was written in 1935. How prescient of the Crimson!
