Berklee City Music Blowout Concert

Inner-City Teens Compete for Six Full-Tuition Scholarships for Fall
2007 Entry at Berklee City Music Blowout Concert, August 7

July 30, 2007 - Berklee will present its annual City Music Blowout
Concert with performances by promising teen talent from neighborhoods
throughout Greater Boston, on Tuesday, August 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the
Berklee Performance Center, 136 Mass. Ave, Boston. Sponsored by
State Street Corporation, the free concert will include pop, jazz,
r&b, and gospel music. The evening will culminate in the awarding of
six full-tuition scholarships totaling more than $800,000 to hopeful
student performers for full-time study at Berklee College of Music
beginning this fall. Call 617-747-2261 for more details.

Fifty student musicians and vocalists between the ages of 15 and 19
represent Dorchester, Hyde Park, Roxbury, Brighton, Mattapan,
Cambridge, Framingham, Roslindale, Jamaica Plain, Charlestown, West
Roxbury, and Lawrence. Four students from Berklee City Music Network
partner sites in Los Angeles will also perform. All are enrolled in
Berklee's Summer Performance Program on SYSTEM 5 scholarships. The
Summer Youth Scholarship for Talent and Excellence in Music (SYSTEM
5) is a component of Berklee City Music, a program that provides
urban youth from the Boston area with after-school mentoring,
Saturday schooling, summer study, and full-tuition scholarships to
Berklee at no cost to them or their families.

The majority of City Music seniors are already accepted to Berklee
and/or other colleges. Those who do not receive full-tuition
scholarships are encouraged to audition for one of many partial
scholarships offered by Berklee, such as the World Scholarship Tour.

Under the direction of J. Curtis Warner, Jr., assistant v.p. for
education outreach, Berklee City Music has provided a variety of
educational and mentoring opportunities to more than 1,000 young
musicians from local urban areas since its inception in 1991. In
March 2007, Berklee launched the City Music Network, expanding the
program nationally to member sites in Philadelphia, Washington, D.C.,
Los Angeles, and Seattle.
