Question Intermediate-more Advanced Jazz Piano Standard Full score/'both hands' transcription

Hi

I'm a student who's going to be taking part in several auditions for various specialist jazz colleges in and around London.

For my audition, in just over 2 months, I have to play 2 standards along with the trio/quartet they give me to play a long with. I am looking for an intermediate-advanced version, pre-arranged score of a jazz standard to play. I am aware that I can arrange my own with my real book, or transcribe the masters; I have done my own, but I would like to keep my options open and decide 100% which 2 pieces I am going to play within the next few days. It does not have to include a transcribed solo, as I can do my own solo! - perhaps just the head, etc. can be scored. A bonus would be if I could listen to the score somehow with midi, or an original recording. Something that's possibly been heard before, perhaps something that shows off a little bit, shows flair?

Thanks a lot for reading, hope you can help.

Umar.

Cool

If you dare: there are at least three books of transcriptions of Art Tatum versions of standards. I used to be able to play one of them. They're impressive as hell, if you can play them.

I was afraid someone was going to suggest that :-P

Hehe, thanks for your suggestion. I think i'm going to choose between Chick Coreas "Spain", The Way You Look Tonight, and Misty. The only thing about Spain is that, although my tutor thinks I play it very well, he said something about other people may not like me doing that song or that it has to be played in a certain way? The only trouble I have is improvising on that particular tune - the reason being I mainly go for the lyrical, sweet melody type improvisation. On "Spain" I usually end up doing licks and runs through scales which I don't really want to do! Perhaps someone can give me help, which scales, and some alternative chords. I've transcribed the chords he used on the solo, and I also have the Mark Levine books to help me out on reharmonizing.

I've blabbled on - i'm kinda new to posting. I'm Umar, aspiring to be a proffesional jazz pianist and a current student from London!
