Vattel Cherry presents his latest project.. West African influenced West Baltimore music.
F. Vattel Cherry was born in Chicago. After experimenting with a variety of instruments, he focused on the double bass at the age of 16. Following two years in the D. C. Youth Orchestra Program Vattel received a full scholarship to Howard University, where he majored in Music Education and began his journey as an improviser and composer. While attending Howard he met the great bassist Keter Betts .After studying with Keter Betts briefly, Vattel was accepted to the Manhattan School of Music (studied with Linda McKnight & Fred Hopkins) where he graduated in 1990 with a B. A .
Mr. Cherry has performed and/or recorded with: Brother Ah & The World Music Trio/Sounds of Awareness, Tommy McCook (of the Skatalites), The Municipal Opera Company of Baltimore, Inc., Charles Gayle, Bern Nix, Teodross Avery, Denis Charles, D. D. Jackson, John Tchicai, Junior Cook, C. Scoby Stroman, William Hooker, Oliver Lake, Hamiett Bluiett, Roy Campbell, William Parker, Joel Futterman, Paul Murphy, Thomas Borgmann, Miles Griffith, David Murray's Big Band, Cecil Taylor's PTHONGOS, Charlie Persip's Superband and David Pleasant's RiddimAthon!
Cherry's work with choreographers includes collaborations with: Kwame A. Ross, Marlies Yearby & Viola Sheeley (of the Urban Bush Women), Andrea E. Woods (of Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Co.), tap dancer Hank Smith and Julio Leitao (director of Batoto Yetu Children's Dance group).
Cherry has worked for numerous arts and education organizations including: Patapsco High School for the Arts (Baltimore, MD), The Performance Project (Sponsored by Warner Music Group Inc.), Arts Connection's Talent Beyond Words and Young Talent Programs, Dancing in the Streets, The Brooklyn Children's Museum, American Museum of Natural History, I Am The Light Of The World, Young Audiences, Hospital Audiences, Lincoln Center's Colloquium on Jazz and Meet-the-Artist School Series (New York City).
