Paul Rutherford RIP

Just read about it in Bags (Nate Dorward was the first to post it). That's too bad. I'm glad I saw him last year at Vision, I liked that set. Wikipedia doesn't have much info, and I couldn't find any obit in a quick google search.

Paul Rutherford

Born Greenwich, London, 29 February 1940, trombone, euphonium, piano.

A stalwart of the early UK free scene who has played in, and contributed positively to, just about every available possibility, in more structured musics as well as obvious free situations: Globe Unity Orchestra, London Jazz Composer's Orchestra, Mike Westbrook Orchestra, and what appears to be a myriad of small groups, e.g.: Iskra 1903, duo with Paul Lovens, Quintet Moderne, and, recently, in trio with Anthony Braxton and Evan Parker. Perhaps most famous for solo trombone improvisations, and while many would dispute the fact that The Gentle harm of the bourgeoisie is the best solo trombone recording, it can't be far from the truth. Great title too.

On the topic of trombone multiphonics (contentious area this - Derek Bailey, Improvisation, p. 109) Paul Rutherford implied to Rusch (1993) that he was the first to use the technique, and particularly before that documented by Joachim Berendt.

It's threads such as this which (painfully) remind me of what I haven't heard . . . yet.

So much music -- so little time.

Dammit!

Oh my god. I literally choked when I saw this thread. I had no idea. I knew he'd been ill in the recent past but the few times I'd seen him over the past couple of years, he seemed to be doing OK. He seemed to be such a gentle soul. I recall how grateful he was for a simple thing like doing a birthday tribute for him on the radio on a leap year a few years back. Thanks to Martin Davidson for all the issues and reissues of Paul's music.

I was planning a radio program tomorrow in acknowledgement of Art Davis, Rahsaan (on his birthdate) and Karel Husa (on his birthday), but look for plenty of Paul's music in tribute over the next couple of Tuesdays if you tune in to WHFR.

As Cem said....FUCK!

Another one of the great ones gone...if there is any sort of afterlife, hopefully he's playing with John Stevens and Derek Bailey right now.

RIP Mr Rutherford, you will missed and remembered.

One of my favorite practicioners of free improv. I saw him live at the Empty Bottle jazz fest twice, once in a solo set and once with Hoxha. I liked that latter band quite a lot. I really like his work in Globe Unity and LJCO.

Where did this news come from originally? I can't seem to find any official word anywhere....

Yes, that's where I got it. Just had the news confirmed via a friend of Barry Guy's.

Thanks for the photo Dennis--that Roswell Rudd on the right? Hadn't known they'd played together, though not surprised.

Aaron and I were at Stefan's punk show last night and Aaron showed me his newest acquisition, Manfred Schoof's European Echoes. I pointed to Rutherford's name and told him that he had just passed away. Aaron's face just fell.

Good eye, Nate. Yes, that's him and the woman on the left is the great trombonist Annie Whitehead. The three played quite a few gigs together and were called "Snap, Crackle, and Pop" by their peers!

Sad news. Gonna go put Paul's stuff on now.

Did I just miss it though: How did he die?

As a complete sidenote- and in no way really needs to be said in this kind of thread but what is up with Vandermark's hair? lose the flat-top!

Just saw this email posted at Bagatellen by LeMo, from the founder of Emanem Records, Martin Davidson:

"As you may already know, Paul Rutherford was found dead in his flat in S.E. London on August 5. The cause of death was sclerosis of the liver and a ruptured aorta.
Paul was one of the pioneers of free improvisation, and many consider him to have been the finest trombonist and one of the finest improvisers in the area. He was certainly a very distinctive musician – many players had been influenced by him to some degree (not only trombonists), but no one sounded anything like him. Among his most important performances were his unaccompanied solos, and those in his trio Iskra 1903 that contained Barry Guy and either Derek Bailey or Philipp Wachsmann. He was a gentle, kind man with an outrageous sense of humour, and will be sorely missed. However, he also suffered from bouts of depression, and was frustrated that he was not recognised more widely.
For those who are able to attend, the funeral will be on Thursday August 16 at 10:30 am at Lewisham Crematorium in Hither Green Cemetery on Verdant Lane, London SE6 1JX. [The nearest station is Grove Park (trains from Charing Cross, Waterloo East & London Bridge). From there, it is about a 20 minute walk, or buses 124 or 284 can be boarded from the bus stop in Downham Way.]"

There's a great compilation of rememberances in the September "All About Jazz" altho I couldn't find it online. Roswell Rudd, Trevor Watts, Evan Parker, lots of other musicians. Worth reading if you can find it.
