The Initialism/Acronym Thread

In my biz I am faced with an overwhelming TON of abbreviations and acronyms which are as pointless as they are frequent.

In today's Fresno Bee, I read an Ohio woman is charged with driving while breast feeding [at 65 mph; what a moron]...would that be a DWN [Driving While Nursing]?

I have to wonder...what other useless acronyms and initializations do you all face in your daily walk in life?

Post them here.

BLAST the trite conscience morons who produce these things.

Crimony.

Uh.... If I'm reading this correctly, didn't you make up the acronym you're complaining about??

Compared to the military all other creators of acronyms are amateurs. Just a few from the phone book:
PERSLOC
DENTRAD
OUTPROC
RUU
EDMIS
AVK
AVU

(don't ask)

SPECOPCO

Actually, they're not as bad now as many years ago. Their phone book was practically illegible at one time.

Actually, it was an initialism...and I wasn't complaining about it.

A point to make the thread go.

a conversational laxative, as it were.

I know of at least one acronym within an acronym at work. that's as bad as I've ever seen.

In publishing, there is BLAD. A blad is a piece of promotional material which reproduces a few pages of a book along with the cover image and sales details. They are commonly used for expensive-to-print books, like photo illustrated books, rather than a full-on galley. It costs a lot less to put a blad in the hands of buyers. Anyway, I did a poll at a major American publishing house in New York once and NOT ONE person could tell me for sure what "blad" meant. The best educated guess, which won some measure of consensus in the room where it was offered, was that it was a German acronym, or possibly a contraction of a longer German word. Bladensteintraumversprung, or something.

Later, when I was employed at a publishing company of some thirty employees in lonely Washington State, i.e., exiled in the publishing antipodes almost, I brought up the word "blad" and asked "Isn't it curious that everyone knows what it is but that no one knows what it means?"

"Basic Layout And Design," said the person seated next to me, looking at me like I was an idiot.

Another publishing word is Ozalid. But that's not an acronym either. WTF?
