Louis Hayes "Cannonball Legacy" band played in Marblehead ( 25 miles north of Boston) last night at the Unitarian Universalist Church. A small-ish space for a church, an old wooden church at that. Signs of tolerence and peace were everywhere and the music added to the vibe.
Vincent Herring, alto; Jeremy Pelt, trumpet; Rick Germanson, piano; David Williams, bass and Master Hayes on drums and cymbals.
We could only stay for one set (it is now Sunday 7am and we're getting ready to drive to Newport). What we heard was magnificent. They all cooked from note one. I couldn't pick out any one member who was better than the others. They all came to play. David Williams was particularly impressive in his section work and a couple of solos. German featured on "Dat Dere."
They played Jeannine; Dat Dere; Unit Seven and a beautiful ballad feature for Pelt on "What's New." I'm forgetting one Nat Adderley tune but we were humming the music all the way back to Boston.
Why this band of all-stars can't get booked into a major Boston venue is beyond me but it's not for not trying.
The music of Cannonball LIVES!!!
