Bert Jansch, Brookdale Lodge, Boulder Creek, California

Saw my man Bert on Sat night at the Brookdale Lodge in Boulder Creek, a place locally famous for having a stream run through the main dining area,

being haunted, and having a person stabbed there last week.

Also its a fine example of that particular brand of victorian hillbilly alice-in-wonderland architecture that exists in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

The room held about 100 or so, we were in the 3rd row. Had to sit through two long opening acts, including that girl from Espers. OK, but not great.

Bert's set:

It Dont Bother Me
Rosemary Lane
Trouble In Mind
Blackwaterslide
My Donald
?
Katie Cruel
The Old Triangle
Bonnie Portmore
Blues Run The Game
Fresh As A Sweet Sunday Morning
My Name Is Carnival
Hey Pretty Girl
Poison

Encore:
High Days
Black Swan

It took him a few songs to get going, there were PA issues. Once he reached Blackwaterslide though, he got into a serious groove. His voice seems the same as ever, and his guitar playing hasnt lost the edge at all. The highlight for me was the Bonnie Portmore, which is one of my favorites. Although I did like most of the new songs from the Black Swan album. He talked a little bit about Jackson Frank, a story about he and John Renbourn in Paris, etc. Great show.

Sounds good, surfer.
I've only gotten into Bert in the last few years, but I like him a lot. Thought Black Swan was a really interesting album.

I need to make a point to try and see him in concert one of these days.
