Manfred Schoof - 70s LPs Scales / Light Lines

Folks,

First post here....

A 1977 concert was broadcast on German TV recently which had tunes from both these ECM (at least one of them was on ECM JAPO I think).

Manfred Schoof (tp,flgl)
Michel Pilz (b-cl)
Jasper van't Hof (keys)
Günter Lenz (b)
Ralf Hüdner (d)

December 19th 1977 NDR Germany

I uploaded some tunes to youtube.

Ostinato

Light Lines

Lonesome Defender

Personally I think these are a wonderful slice of that 1970s kozmik era, and they don't sound that dated to me. Very nice to actually see songs from those LPs played live... the LPs are of course superb. Also recommend the Horizons LP which came in 1979 with Rainer Bruninghaus on piano...

Scales is JAPO 60013 which was later released as ECM19004 and both feature "Ostinato" above. Light Lines is JAPO 60019 and features "Light Lines" and "Lonesome Defender." The album Horizons is JAPO 60030

I agree that this is not too dated. Without the keys it could even be somewhat contemporary. But, check out bassist Gunter Lenz hair!

Thanks for the info. I have the vinyls, would love to hear more music in this vein (i.e. kinda free in parts, some electronics, strong chords, pedal tones) . Do you know anymore?

I also like the Julian Priester stuff from this era... Polarisation is just great...

I heard some wonderful radio recordings (Funkhaus Hamburg) of JP from 1977...

Soft Machine

Try later Soft Machine and anything else with Elton Dean from this period.

The Cuneiform label has reissued some great live sets by this group.

Thanks... yeah I have the Elton Dean CD somewhere.. I haven't heard too much Soft Machine but the Youtube clips are really cool.

There was a short clip of Ian Carr on a UK program circa 1974 where there was a load of rhodes and wah wah basoon going on... I think it might have been Nucleus... would love to have seen more of that.. but it was in a UK documentary about Jazz Britannia...

I really enjoy the more kozmik music of this era... Hal Galpers first LPs are sublime.. just wondering if there was anything on ECM like this.. the Schoof is amongst the best stuff I've ever heard.

So you did the Youtube uploads - great stuff (I liked how Pilz kept fighting with his glasses!). I found them googling Manfred Schoof and looking for videos. I really enjoyed with Scales and Light Lines - have them on vinyl, would love them on CD...also Horizons, which has Bruninghaus on keyboard.

Great to see that these LPs are now reissued on the CD Resonance. However, I'm surprised/disappointed they didn't include "The Abstract Face of Beauty" from "Horizons" as it was such a great track... it doesn't seem to be for lack of space on the CD...

It would be also wonderful to uncover more live music from that original group... the later "Reflections" LP was like listening to a radio broadcast from a taper in the audience.... I don't even know if it was legit...

I too wonder why the reissue excludes "Abstract Face of Beauty" and "Sunset". I understand that Manfred Schoof himself picked the tunes to be included and wonder why he would have left them out. I am really looking forward to this reissue.
