May you all have a happy and prosperous 5768.
I wonder if Steve Turre can play the ram's horn as well as he can play the shells.

My friend Carol (non-Jewish by inclination) was invited to a Rosh Hashanah dinner this evening and given the task of procuring a honey cake. She called me to ask for recommendations. Like I'd know. But I dutifully did some research and found that the ones baked at William Greenberg, a kosher bakery on the Upper East Side, came highly recommended. (William Greenberg? William? Just doesn't ring true). She bought one--$17; I guess they don't come cheap this time of year. Is there anything in honey cakes besides honey and cake? Don't think I ever had one. Beginning to salivate....
Anyway, happy new year, everyone.

Cool! Hope he's still getting the odd part. I haven't seen him in about four years.

He's done about five Law & Orders. He played my dad a long time ago in a short film!
He's a great guy.

I like to dip my apple slices in caramel sauce, but honey's cool with me, like my Jewish friends at JC.

Ashkenazim cooking is really boooooring, except for pastrami and bagels.
Sephardi is the real deal.

i really like bluenoter's post. one of my fathers grandfathers was a sephardic jew from spain. at one point he moved to chihuahua mexico fell in love and married a mexican indian catholic woman. as the tradition is only carried on through the mothers lineage our family has been catholic since then. most people are surprised to discover that i am a chicano and not jewish, although in a way i kinda am i guess. oh, the grandfathers name was miguel landei. i have studied judaism and find it to be a beautiful religion. so, happy new year to all my jewish cousins here at the alley

You apparently are forgetting about potato latkes. They provide us with a reason to live. They're the one dish that was NEVER leftover at my house.

yep, I forgot those beauties.
I make a killer potato kugel that I learned from my mother.
But they can keep those sweet noodle kugels as far as I'm concerned. Yuk!
Since the 2nd Ave. Deli closed, there's nowhere in the world where you can get a decent matzo ball soup.

Keep the hamish foodie talk coming, guys and gals! Rita and I are hosting our book club a week from Sunday -- we always do a themed potluck, and we're reading Bellow's "Herzog".
