Jason Marsalis at Snug Harbor, New Orleans

Even if you haven't heard of Jason, you've heard of his brothers (what you think of what they think about music may be another matter, though). He, however, has his own ideas about music.
I heard him at Snug Harbor with Edward Livingston on bass, Brian Coogan on piano, Samir Zarif (sp?) playing tenor saxophone, and some guy playing alto (Jason Marsalis plays drums.)
This set was, by far, the most fun I've ever had seeing jazz played. The horn lines weren't exactly synched up, and the feeling of the band was generally loose, but there was an element of pure sponteneity present that I have never felt as strongly as then. (Samir told me afterward that they had not had a chance to rehearse as a band before the gig.) They played a wide range of standards, from Billie's Bounce to Wayne Shorter's Penelope.

If you're ever in New Orleans, you should check this guy out

What was Bryan Coogan like on piano? I was in New Orleans late last year and saw him on organ with Johnny Vidacovich and Tim Green the Maple Leaf and was impressed.

I liked his playing a lot, he was my favorite part of the band aside from Jason. He really has a unique style as a piano player; i'd be interested to hear what he sounds like on organ
