2007 - 2008 NHL season

I know it's not the regular season yet, but I'm assuming that we're going to start a new thread for 2007 - 2008, so here it is.

First pre-season game for my guys, the Flames, my guys came up short.
Florida won, 3 - 0.
One thing though, my Kipper was not in goal, so I take comfort in that if he had been, things might have been different.
To be fair, the rookie goaltender, Matt Keetly, tried his best and it is pre-season.
Disappointing none the less.

Speaking of Kiprusoff, my new jersey is here and it has Kipper's name on the back.
One thing. Hockey sweaters are not the most figure-flattering garments in my wardrobe, but the new ones are very nice in that the stripes are on the sides and vertical rather than horizontal, which would make me look like I burn deisel.

Speaking of goalies, other than Nabokov, the Sharks have nobody on the camp roster with NHL experience.

As usual, they say that there are a couple of really good ones in the mix, as SJ has been a breeding ground for young net minders, like Kipper & Nabby & Toskala were. I'd be curious to see if they trade for a back up with experience later in the season.

Some veterans at camp for the Red Wings in Traverse City include Brent Sopel, Jason Cullimore and Aaron Downey.

Here's hoping for a tougher 2007-8 team.

And hey, Mone, when you finally come back, what the fuck is up with your boy Scotty Nieds? I read they officially suspended him to spare themselves the cap hit, which was expected. But when the hell does he decide?

Well, hope springs eternal...
The Flames have been very competitive for the last few seasons.
I hope that they figure out what their "away" curse is this year.
Every time they were playing out of town I wondered if they had been given something in the foreign water.

The 07-08 Hockey News listed the Wings as having the fewest fighting majors
last year, 10. George Parros from Anaheim had 18 in 34 games.

Apparently, Shane O'Brien has been roughing up some of our prospects in camp. Niiice. Between him and Andre Roy, we can hopefully keep the thugs
off St. Louis and Richards this year.

Larry, how's Cullimore looking? I was hoping we'd pick him up and give him
a chance.

I'm still reeling from the hit across the backside delivered to I forget who on the Wings by Jamie McLellen in the last game the Flames played in the playoffs last year. Although the attack with the goal-stick was wrong, in so many ways, it was certainly a memorable 18 seconds on the ice for McLellen.
So far he's keeping a low profile.
This year I hope there's more skillful hockey and less fighting. I can dream.

Slurpy, you really know how to hurt a guy, don't you? I just read that in the Hockey News the other day myself. Ugh.

Haven't heard much yet. The first televised game was last night, and he didn't play. I'm really hoping Sopel finds a spot. He's awfully good to be on a tryout basis with an NHL team.

I'm rooting for more of both!

Only downer to watching last night's game wasn't the loss, it was watching the neutral zone trap in full swing. Friggin' Lemaire is such a paradox. Best coach in the league, but created the worst thing the game has seen in my lifetime.

Forget the size of the nets. Blow the whistle and open the box when 5 guys line up between the blue lines. Simple.

So far in the pre-season my guys have been less than stellar with no wins and three losses.
I'll look on the bright side and assume that they are taking notes from the playbook of the most successful pool-sharks, intending to reel in the wins when it counts.
I actually have access to a season ticket for the regular season, from time to time, this year [ten rows behind the Flames' bench], so I'll be at the Saddledome a few times. You bet I'm excited. But, I'm reminded of my dad's saying that, if the cameramen are paying attention, TV is the best seat in the house. You can't smell the sweat. But, no matter how good your seats are, the in-net camera and ice-level cameras trump them.

Sorry, Larry.

Christ, did anyone hear about Dan Boyle? He was sitting at his locker
after Saturday's pre-season game, shut some door on his locker and one
of his skates fell from a hook and severed 3 of his tendons by his wrist.
Surgery yesterday, out 6 to 8 weeks.

&$%#!!!!!!!!

Good grief!!!! Oddly, that's what my mother feared when my brothers and I were growing up. She never let us hang our skates by the laces on a hook.
You know how mothers wouldn't let their little boys have Red Ryder air rifles, because "You'll shoot your eye out"?
Well, my mother worried that we would be cut by the very sharp blades of our skates, should they fall on us.
We scoffed. But, I guess it can happen.

I hope Boyle is OK soon.

Sounds like we had the same mother, Patricia.

I never did get the BB rifle I always wanted. One year I snuck up into our
attic where my folks always hid Christmas presents and saw a BB Rifle box.
I was stoked! I open the box on Christmas morning and it had some other
present in it!! Mothers.........

Don't tell me. Clothes!

.................................................

Fourth pre-season last Saturday for my Flames. Went into overtime and, again, they lost, 5 - 4.
But at least they came close.
Every day in every way my team gets better and better.

Quite honestly I don't remember. All I know is it wasn't a friggin BB Gun.
I've been trying to suppress that memory for quite a while now.

Keep that "hope springs eternal" flame (no pun intended) going, Patricia!

Thanks Slurpy.
I'd hate to think that I have an otherwise unflattering sweater that I can't wear any other time except to cheer my team on when they are playing.

Season opener in London England. First period between the Kings and the Ducks.
So far, the score is 1 - 0 for the Kings.

First game of the season for the Flames is here at the Saddledome between my guys and the Flyers.

The Ducks look lethargic, hopefully it will continue to when they play in Detroit for the Red Wings' home opener.

Hockey season is officially underway, so it's a good time. The only bummer is, my cable provider still hasn't sealed the deal on the NHL Center Ice package, so there's a chance I won't be able to get it this season. If that happens, I guess I have to switch to another provider, which will be unfortunate since they do a great job otherwise.

No hockey for you, Larry??
Of course change providers if that's the case.

Third period now with the Kings leading 3 - 0.
What's wrong with the Ducks, Mone'?
The Kings are walkin' all over your guys.
Vot the Hal???

Not quite "no hockey," Pat, but I'd only be able to get the local games plus the CBC and VS network games. Which isn't enough.

Looking at the H.N.I.C. sat tv schedule.
Sat. Feb. 9 @ 3:00 p.m. Detroit at Toronto.
I haven't checked yet,,,, the TSN, and Leaf station schedule yet .

>>Just checked...Look like they play only one time. You get to see one game on the tube anyway Larry. Wings are scheduled to play in Buffalo ,,you would think being so close that they would schedule a game with the Leafs. What idiots that run the NHL

For sure.
I watch two sports channels [TSN and ESPN] plus CBC on Saturday for Hockey Night In Canada.
During the season I quite often have a choice between three or four different games, both Eastern and Western.
I almost never watch a broadcast on NBC if the game is covered here.
My Flames get priority of course.
But, sometimes there's an Eastern League game preceding it, or following it.
Sometimes the broadcast times on two different channels don't dovetail, so I have to switch between two games.
It's exhausting I can tell you.

Today the final was 4 - 1 for the Kings, with the fourth goal an empty net a few seconds from the end of the third.
But, I think we may have a lurker or two who root for the Kings.
If so, congrats to them.

Don, good luck this year for your Leafs. It's time they played in the playoffs at least.

You're right, Don. I heard the local guys discussing this during a preseason game and I must have heard them wrong. Maybe they meant no home game against the Leafs. I'm still in favor of a home and home with every team in the league.

Slurpy, what I heard from mine is that whoever puts the thing together (maybe the NHL) is insisting that the cable company also include the NHL channel. I've never heard anything about an NHL channel, so maybe it's something new for this year? Either way, I'd love to have it, whatever it is. But I assume the cable company doesn't, thus the impasse.

Isn't NHL Channel the folks who did the show between periods during the game from London?
I had the game on VS.

Larry, try again. I just got setup. They (local cable) said they just got the OK. And, yeah, what Mike said...the NHL Channel was doing the between
period programming on VS. Don't know what that means but hopefully it's
all ironed out now.

Ducks v Wings Wednesday!
