There was a bit of a discussion in the NYC Jazz Scene thread.

My brother was there, and said that the first set with McBride and Haynes, while it got off to a 'rough' start, gelled in the first tune and was really the Sonny he's dreamed of seeing for so long. He said that Haynes and Rollins had a great hook up and that McBride was walkin his tail off. He loved that set.

As for Sonny with his band, said they were awful. too loud, too unfocused. He wished that he left after the first set.

He wasn't alone.

My only guess is that Sonny feels a real personal loyalty to the cats in his band. He can't be unaware that a significant number of jazz people can't get with it.

He certainly has a loyalty to his nephew Clifton and Bob Cranshaw. The rest of the band has changed a number of times over the years.
