Firehouse 12 to Present the Ted Poor Trio September 28th

On Friday, September 28th, New Haven's Firehouse 12 will present a two-set performance by New York-based drummer/composer Ted Poor and his new trio featuring saxophonist Loren Stillman (sitting in for Chris Potter for this performance) and bassist Scott Colley. Poor, who first played Firehouse 12 last October with the David Berkman Quartet, formed this chord-less group earlier this year to perform a new book of his original compositions featuring loose harmonies and plenty of room for improvisation.

Critics have called Poor "impressive" (Richard Kamins, Hartford Courant), "supremely talented" (Dennis Hollingsworth, AllAboutJazz.com) and "a sharp young drummer who has had the effect, in recent months, of galvanizing any group in which he plays" (Nate Chinen, New York Times). JazzReview.com's Isaac Laughlin adds, "Drummer Ted Poor makes contributions that show a strong appreciation for the collective goals of the ensemble, while also managing to display significant individual verve."

Poor moved to New York in 2003 after graduating from the Eastman School of Music that same year. He has since become an in-demand drummer on the New York scene and a regular member of working bands such as the Ben Monder Quartet, the Cuong Vu Trio and the Jerome Sabbagh Quartet. In addition to his trio, Poor's work as a leader includes his 2003 debut CD, All Around (Trier Records), and recent performances with his groups Third Wheel (featuring Monder and trumpeter Ralph Alessi) and Bad Touch (featuring Stillman, multi-reedist Chris Speed and bassist John Hebert). He is also a founding member of the Brooklyn Jazz Underground (BJU), a collective of musicians working together to build awareness for their music. Learn more at http://tedpoor.com
