Has Anyone Seen Autumn?
Here it is October 8th and I have yet to put the heat on in my house. I usually fire up the heat by the second week of September. It's suppose to be around 85 degrees today. We spent the weekend at our house in Vermont this weekend thinking it would at least be cool. No dice. I mowed the lawn while enjoying a sunny 75 degree day on Saturday. I heard on the radio that the Chicago Marathon had to be cut short because of the heat and humidity.
Don't get me wrong. I love the warm weather, I'm not a big fan of winter and I also like the idea of not giving up money to the gas company. But this is ridiculous. I do like autumn and I always look forward to the cool crisp and colorful New England days but I'm afraid that autumn will be bypassed and we're going to go straight to the bitter cold gray days of old man winter. Where the hell is my autumn!

Autumn is here in the Bay Area. Rain tomorrow, large swell to follow on Wednesday, hopefully surfable.

It was hotter than a motherfucker here yesterday. I was pissed.
Cold front is moving through today and we're supposed to be in the upper 60's/low 70's for the rest of the week with overnight lows near 40. That's a little more like it for this time of year.

Goes back and forth, here, this year. Windows open, windows closed. But the foliage is on, Jimmy. At least up here. I haven't had to work in anything but shirtsleeves, so far.

Not much color to speak of in the southern part of the state, Gary. It'll probably start turning right around this week.

Strange having the leaves turn when it's 84. A wilting 84, too.

It's cooling off back there. I'm hoping for a couple of cold nights before we get to Woodstock on the 19th.

The first signs of Autumn have been showing up over this way, and are most welcome. Saturday and Sunday were absolutely perfect weather--upper 70s to low 80s with a cool breeze. Today's just weird, Santa Ana warm winds and a bit on the hot side.

It's kinda crazy here in New York. I have my parents here so they can experience a crisp, brisk Autumn in New York with the peerless turning of the Northeast foliage (or at least that is my experience of it coming from evergreen country) and instead it's been a feverish, sweaty summer. Still, you know, better than rain. Actually, it's been nice, sunshiny - not bad at all - just not fall. We went to D.C. for a few days last week and it was 10 degrees warmer - so we've maintained 80s, 70% humidity for the past 10 days for the most part. I guess I'll send them pictures when fall finally hits.
I do remember this time of year "Indian Summer" being the warmest period for San Francisco - don't know if that still holds.

No, but close enough to not make a big difference.
Anybody else catch that front page article in the NYT today about the Chicago Marathon? I wasn't even aware that they stopped it. One person dropped dead on the route and more than forty participants were hospitalized. That had to be one ugly scene.

It is.
You should check out the foliage in the Smokey Mountains one day. That's probably the best I've ever seen.
Though I suppose it all varies from one year to the next. The previous four falls here were blah. Last year really made up for lost leaf peepage.

I show 87 degrees and only 47% humidity so I thought today was a bit of a break.
It must be that office A/C though - I forgot my sweater in truth - so what would I know about outside now that vacation is over. :teary-eyed smiley:

Yep, those temps sound right familiar.
82 with 52% humidity right now. Real overcast as well, or it would be much warmer.
Our ten day looks sweet enough though.

It's cold here, we're having to burn a fire. It is supposed to be down in the mid twenties and lower here Wednesday night. It's snowed on Mount Hood and the others mountains in the Cascade range, which are quite near, the snow on Hood stopping the search for the fellows who perished up there.
We're usually a month further away before it gets this cold. Our cold weather almost always hits on Halloween night, snowing, blowing and raining, making "Trick or Treaters" miserable, them looking like little drowned rats, and making it hard to see them when you're driving.
We're out in the country, so we have only had about 3 Trick or Treaters in all the years we've lived here, and I really miss having them come around, it was so much fun to have them show up when we were in town, but I always gave away too much candy and we'd have to run to town to buy more, trying to get there and back before it had all run out.

oh yeah - that reminds me last week it snowed in Salt Lake City, Utah! So here we're blazing in the get naked weather and Sandi's in a parka in the Cascades. And Sandi, if ever I am in your neighborhood on Halloween, I'm gonna drop by for treats but no Smarties please I just like chocolate.

The guy who died had an undiagnosed heart ailment, but, yeah, it wasn't pretty.

Yep.

But, it has also snowed on Halloween. Spring and Fall can be really funky around here. A Tuesday afternoon with a high of 50 followed by a wednesday afternoon with a high of 80 is not all that uncommon. And we can get stuck in those types of patterns for weeks.

Now I'm sure you truly understand why I was digging the weather that weekend. Mr. Pootz and I came back home to 95 degree weather.

My son and I were fly fishing in the southern Sierras yesterday and saw a hint of fall . . . a splash of yellow, gold and red here and there. We also saw traces of snow from a recent snowfall at upper altitudes (4000 + ft.)
I'm sure that Patti and I will see much more evidence of fall conditions when we return to Alaska tomorrow.

BTW...it was a roasty toasty 44 last night and it got way up to 75 on the weekend.
I stacked a cord of Mountain Oak firewood on a cool, crisp Autumn Saturday morning this past weekend.
Ahhhh.
To be in the San Joaquin Valley now that Fall is here.
